Video of Smokey Astra...
« on: 19 July 2009, 14:46:01 »

Vid below is of the Astra this morning, after I ran it up to temperature, by Maria's....

Note that this was from warm, not cold.

The problem is actually worse than it's ever been, since I changed all the stem seals....  :-/

Considering the amount of oil coming up past the throttle body, probably not  ;D

It's a long shot but the level is slightly over the top mark on the stick - I'm going to drain it out and put correct amount in....

dont think that would be a prob, mine has been like that for the last 2k.
What coulor are the plugs have you checked?
looks more like the oil rings on your pistons mate. so It looks like your going to have to strip the motor again sorry.

Thats a ring.....the head work will have exacerbated the fault

Yep, I concluded that since sealing the top end, will have probably made the problem worse!

Interestingly mark, the compression on each pot is well over 18bar, which I think is maybe due to oil? The tops of pistons are all also wet when I take out plugs and shine in torch.

I don't mind removing the head again, but - I'm really not confident with fitting new rings. It's one of those things that, once shown, I'll be able to do endlessly, but I'm worried about breaking it!   :-[

Oil control ring James  :y

Get yourself a piston ring clamp ( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Snap-on-Piston-Ring-Clamp_W0QQitemZ110415424035QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Hand_Tools_Equipment?hash=item19b545aa23&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A6%7C72%3A2140%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A25 ) or split an old oil can and use with jubilee clips (don't laugh used this set up to re-ring tuned 2 Lit (overbored) MGB B-series engine!!).

Really easy to fit rings - once you've done a couple James  ;)
