2000 (Facelift) Oemga CDX 2.5 V6 Auto For Sale
« on: 19 October 2009, 14:19:50 »

Sadly the time has come to sell my beloved Omega.

I don't like buying cars, so I tend to buy a good'n every ten years or so, and then look after it well - which is exactly what I did with this one.

Anyhow, I bought the Omega from CD Bramall at Middlesbrough in August 2000 with just a few thousand miles on the clock. The General Manager there had used this car for his own personal transport, and also as a demonstrator, but the [then] new VX220 had just been delivered, and it was summertime ......   :)

The car was built in 1999, and was first registered in October of that year, although it is the 2000 (facelift) model. Being a factory car it came with a few extras, including a genuine Irmshcer front spoiler, and the lip on the boot lid (which is slightly bigger than that fitted on the Elite model).

Current mileage is a shade under 103,000 miles, so it is just nicely run in. The cam belt was last done about 20,000 miles ago, (I need to check), and I have used Mobil 1 synthetic oil since the first service. I work from home, so I don’t use the car for commuting, but when I do use it I tend to cover long distances at motorway speeds. We also use it for family holidays.

I had a new set of Pirelli P6000 tyres (225/55 VR16) fitted two summers ago, which proabaly have another 5,000 miles of wear in them. (I usually expect 40,000 miles from a set, which may give some idea of how I drive the car). I had some problems with balancing, which led to a new alloy wheel being fitted unnecessarily, before Pirelli’s Technical manager diagnosed a faulty tyre, which was replaced FOC after about 5,000 miles. So, there is a spare alloy wheel with the car!

The so called 'space saver', (205/55 R16), is bigger than most cars road wheels, and has never been used.

Being a CDX the car comes with the usual refinements, including electronic climate control, ABS, Stability Control, Xenon headlights, headlamp washers, sunroof, CD Changer, heated seats, trip computer and lots of other goodies.

The car has always been well maintained, initially by the main dealer, and more recently at a very good local independent garage (after CD Bramall became Evans Halshaw).

As far as I know, everything works, expect for the electric height adjuster on the front passenger seat, which clunks, but doesn’t adjust. The electric windows on the rear doors sometimes need to be inched up too, but I suspect this is because they are not used very often.

There has been no major work, but the oil seals were replaced on the differential under warranty, and the aircon condenser was replaced about two years ago. The rear offside door was also replaced under warranty owing to internal corrosion.

I can honestly say that the bodywork is unmarked, with no dings or scratches, and all of the doors close and lock properly. There is of course some stone chipping, as would be expected after 100,000 miles, but nothing out of the ordinary. The front and rear bumpers have some marks from the original users golf trolley, and minor indiscretions by others in car parks. The front spoiler does have some paint scuffing (my fault – I can explain) and stress marks, but these are all easily rectified.

The interior is virtually unmarked, and nobody has ever been allowed to smok in the car. The Vauxhall mats are well worn, and could do with being replaced, but they have protected the carpets well.

There was a slight issue with coolant loss, which remains a mystery. This had been going on for the past few years, and was initially diagnosed as a failing head gasket, but this proved not to be the case. Flushing the system with a flush aid and filling with fresh red antifreeze and some leak sealer seems to have solved the problem, as I have not needed to top it up for about six months now.

Realistically it will proably need a new head gasket in the next year or so, but it would be well worth it on a car in this condition. The exhaust manifold gasket is also blowing slightly when the car is cold, but this would be easily rectified when the head gasket is replaced.

The front disks were replaced about 3,000 miles ago. My wife uses the car for work every day, so they are  clean and shiny.

The road fund licence runs out at the end of October, and I think the MOT is either October or November, but I will gladly get the MOT done.

Now, to get down to business. My wife has decided she wants a new Astra. I could get the old girl cubed, but that seems a shame and a waste of a good car.

The Astra is ex demo, so they are not offering Scrappage at present, but have offered me £650 Part Exchange to close the deal.

Time of course is limited, but if anyone would like to offer £650 I would far rather sell the old girl to a OOF member than have her sent to auction.

NN

Edit: I should add that as this car was first registered in 2000, (not 2001), it qualifies for the lower (standard) Road Fund Tax rating.

And finally, the business end of things.  :)

I am sure it is a bargain, (well I hope so), but I know it needs some work on the engine at some point, (suspect Head Gasket), so I wouldn't want to ask top dollar for it.

I just don't have the time to do the work myself, as much as I woudl like to, and I don't want the old girl to stand rotting on the drive, so I would rather sell it at a good price.

It will need some new tyres soon, which is on of the reasons I would rather sell now than later.

NN

PS: I should have mentioned that it had a whole new exhaust system (from the catalytic converters aft) less than a month ago. It also had a new auxiliary drive belt tensioner fitted, but the belt itself was reported to be OK.

Am I right in thinking that for £650 the car will come with a 12 month ticket?

Sorry chaps. I think it is sold to JamesholeinblockMV6, who is planning to collect it on Saturday.  :'(

He tells me he is planning to replace the head gasket and so forth, so I look forward to hearing how he gets on.  :)

Indeed.....  :)

Factoring the coolant leak and exhaust manifold fixes, The price is around what I'd expect in the current climate - but I recognise it's still a very good deal indeed.

What makes this car more Special, is that it's been owned by the same person for so long, is honestly advertised, and clearly cared for throughout it's whole life.

It is one of the few examples that is well worth the TLC.

This is going to be "my" car - in addition to the oil burning ashtray dog transporter! :D

Same difference. I don't think I have ever heard it working except on ice, and maybe on a bit of mud on the roads round here.

I have always found the car very stable on wet roads and in crosswinds, but one thing the Omega clearly wasn't designed for is driving on hard packed snow; especially on Pirelli P6000's.  ;D

Going from the sublime to the horrible, I drew the short straw today when Avis gave me a Chevrolet Matiz. Driving that in the wind and rain in Devon today was not my idea of fun.

There was me hoping James would keep me updated on what was happening to the old girl over the next 100,000 miles.  :)

Must admit I have never considered gas myself, although it does have some obvious advantages.

I am getting around 42 MPG on a good run from my new Diseasel Jag, so gas wouldn't provide quite the same benefits. I have often thought the Jag engine and gearbox (around 260 BHP) would suit the Omega well, although I think the brakes would get a bit hot.  ;D

Well the old girl has finally gone.  :'(

I met James at Darlington railway station this afternoon, and took him home to check over the car.

He seemed very pleased with it, and after a cuppa he left to make his way back to south Wales in pouring rain and high winds. Safe journey James.  :)

(Checking over the doccuments last night I noticed that the Omega was first registrered on 25 October 1999, so it will be ten years old tomorrow.)

We then went to pick up our new 1.6 Astra Elite. The Astra is a nice car, and (so far) very comfortable, but nothing like the Omega. We have been spoilt I think!

My wife elected to drive my new Jag there and back, (her excuse being that she is used to an automatic), so I had better keep my keys in a safe place.  :y

Astra is nice, but its the size. Nothing squashes the bumps like a nice 2 ton car  ;D

New Jag? Do Tell! XJ? I maybe 25 but i do like big Jags  :)

SWMBO's courtesy car VW Passat has just gone back today. I reckon it can't be far off the size of an Omega, not sure about the weight  :-/, but considering it was a 57 plate against my T reg 99 car, even SWMBO ( who knows nor wants to know anything about cars) said that the ride in it was poor compared to my 158K miles Omega!  :y  :y

FWD again, they have to have harder ride  :(

RWD is always going to be more balanced, better turning circle too.

I borrowed a Rover 827 once, you needed a football field to turn the thing round in.  :-?

Errr, Sigh.... i really dont care what you have driven, its just basics.

FWD cards have to drive and steer the front wheels, RWD just steer, so they have more space. (unless they are serious performance cars with huge wheels)

An Omega can turn tighter than a Ford Fiesta (well couple shapes back anyway)

You want to try a Westfield! Still, there are driving "techniques" to improve turning circle, especially if you have a LSD.  :-X

Are you just trying to prove what a spotty pretentious, know it all tw4t you are!  >:(  >:( I was agreeing with you, just using another FWD car as an example. I do know all about the difference in turning circle etc etc between the 2. Up untill buying this shed of an Astra I'd never owned a FWD car and have a licence longer than you've had a birth certificate.

Well the old girl has finally gone.  :'(

I met James at Darlington railway station this afternoon, and took him home to check over the car.

He seemed very pleased with it, and after a cuppa he left to make his way back to south Wales in pouring rain and high winds. Safe journey James.  :)

Hi Tunnie,
No, not an XJ but a two year old S-Type SE 2.7 Twin Turbo V6 Diesel with just 22,000 miles on the clock.  :)

I was looking for something like the Omega, and didn't like much of what I saw. I had tried a couple of X-Types, but was persuaded to try an S-Type by a salesman at Stratstones. I should have known better but I have not been dissapointed.

After some searching I was lucky to find one with built in SatNav, xenons, heated seats, 18" wheels, full leather interior in Barley and some other goodies.

Handling is firmer and more preicise than the Omega, and braking from the 14" disks is phenomenal. The engine is remarkably smooth and powerful, and yet gives 40 + MPG on a run. The only downside so far is that the boot is a bit small (I'm sure Jagar Owners are supposed to send luggage ahead), and the massive Pirellis cost upwards of £225 each.

However, my wife has taken a liking to driving it, so I have to get up early in the morning otherwise I am left with the Astra for the day!  :)

Anyhow, I hope you like the pictures.

That'll be the one, I had a feeling it was an XJ but couldn't think why JC would've been driving one.

Been trying to find that review on youtube, he got all the 90's sports cars of the day in a line up, porkas, Ferrari and such, he was sat in the XJ, classical music playing he goes 'ooooo an S button' pressed that, launches off the line and thrashes everything.  :)

Don't tell anyone but it was an hotel!  :)

Clarkson did drive an STR (Supercharged 4.2 litre - 400 + BHP) against a Monaro and something else. He liked the S-Type but I think the Monaro was more suited to his mentality.
