2008 Vectra 1.8 petrol manual
I like playing tapes in my car. I hoped I could replace the Vectra radio/CD player with an Omega CCR 2006 radio/CD/tape player. It fits the aperture all right, but the connections are not the same. Are there adapters available?

2008 1.8 petrol manual Vectra
I am fitting a reversing sensor kit to my Vectra. I have failed to get a Haynes manual locally. Can anyone kindly tell me the colour code for the reversing light lead?

Omega General Help / Rear shock turret rusty - what to do?
« on: 19 June 2019, 12:23:26 »

As my MOT tester advised, both rear shock absorber turrets are rusty.  Car is a 2003 3.2 ex-police saloon, has had sills welded 3 years ago, I imagine little is worth doing on the turrets. Do you agree?

Omega General Help / Rear fog lights not working. Fuse 28 OK
« on: 18 June 2019, 14:35:00 »
2003 3.2 manual ex-police car.
MOT tester observes neither rear fog light illuminates. I have checked fuse 28, it's OK. Is there a relay?

I have not yet sat in a Vectra. This one pops up 5 miles away. Sounds a bit rich for me, yet interesting. Tell me I am nuts.

Buying Astras, I learned the hard way that specification is important. Looking at Vectras, bottom spec LIFE has aircon, cruise, steering wheel audio controls, CD30 radio CD, steel wheels, all I want. Exclusiv and Design have alloy wheels with skinny tyres, SRi and Elite have 17" wheels with skinnier tyres.  I am no fan of low profile tyres, so am looking for Life or Exclusiv models.

I thank DG for bringing to my attention the importance of seeking the right spec of used cars.

Any comments?

Last week MOT tester pointed out the alternator belt was in a bad state. Yesterday I replaced it with new, tricky job, because of little space between RH bottom of engine and body. I imagine on original assembly the engine is dropped in fully assembled, with little thought for belt changes in 15 years time. I suppose other front wheel drive cars are similar.

2003 3.2 manual ex-police saloon
I have owned this car for 12 years. The brake pedal travel before biting has steadily grown over the years. I suspect master cylinder bore wear, and have retained a spare from a scrapped car for this reason. Daughter has just brought this car home to return to London in the 2008 Astra. Even after 2 yearly brake fluid changes pedal travel has not decreased.
Haynes rates this job a 4 spanner job, and says it needs a new O-ring and new grommets, are these really essential? Is it really a difficult job?

General Car Chat / New Volvo suffers total brake failure
« on: 25 May 2019, 14:41:34 »
Entertaining letter is today's Telegraph Money section about a new Volvo XC90 suffering complete brake failure while at speed on a motorway. Driver's wife sent the Telegraph video of him stamping on the brake pedal, with no apparent effect. Fortunately traffic was light and driver brought the car to rest without accident. Volvo examined the car and advised the driver 'the fault was caused by a part not being put in place during construction at the factory.'

After negotiation money changed hands, and now he is looking at a BMW or a Land Rover.

General Car Chat / Will Omega wheels fit on a Vectra?
« on: 22 May 2019, 22:34:57 »
I haven't yet even sat in a Vectra, but I am considering buying one and have many old Omega wheels fitted with good tyres. Would they fit a Vectra?

General Car Chat / Rover Streetwise auxiliary belt
« on: 21 May 2019, 20:44:32 »
MOT tester pointed out to me that the auxiliary belt looked frayed and about to fail, he advised me to change it. I agreed with him. However, when I came to order a new belt online, I find the belt depends whether or not the car has air conditioning - this car has. How do I obtain the correct belt?

General Car Chat / Rover Streetwise passed MOT!
« on: 21 May 2019, 15:30:22 »
As said in earlier thread, I changed the central exhaust, a couple of bulbs, and adjusted the handbrake, and submitted this car for MOT. It passed! 2 'repair as soon as possible' notes, both drive shaft gaiters worn and joints worn, tester recommended replacing drive shafts with good used; 2 worn tyres, aux belt worn, and washer alignment poor. But it passed; I'll settle for that.
