Are Omega estate cills galvanised?

All my Omega saloons  have suffered terminal rust in the cills. My 2 Omega estates (v and X reg) have healthy cills. The cills of my 3 Astras are rust free, and not covered by plastic covers; Haynes mentions zinc treatment. Discuss.

Wouldn't have thought estate sills would be galvanised but the saloon ones not,wouldn't the sills be the same estate or saloon?You could try protecting the inner faces of your estate sills with some kind of cavity wax as I believe they tend to rot[like wheel arches]more from the inside out rather than the other way round.

I was impressed how well preserved the Astras were. Haynes states 'the bonnet is made of aluminium, whereas the doors, and some other vulnerable panels, are made of zinc coated metal. These are further protected by being coated with an anti-chip primer prior to being sprayed.' I wish they had treated Omegas similarly.

They did...


most of the rusty areas on an Omega(all cars really) have rusted through from the inside. This is caused by several factors: it's difficult to coat the inside of a box section; several overlapping panels; welded flanges like wheel arches; designs that drain into a section - sills and door frame/skins; most coatings don't apply well to external corners etc etc
