IT help, please.
« on: 02 November 2019, 19:55:54 »

I have a folder for my business letters, which are written as Word documents with JPG extensions. Suddenly the extensions have all changed to DOCX ones - without my permission!
I cannot view them without using FileViewer3, which is tedious.
Is there any way to recover this situation, i.e. returning them to Word files?
Any help gratefully received.  :-*

.docx are word files .. in the newer format .. if you wish to go back to the old(er) format .. open in word then SAVE AS and choose "word 97- 2003 (.doc)" from the drop down menu under "save as type"

a .jpg is a picture NOT a word document  :)

Thanks Nige; however, Windows tells me that it cannot open DOCX files.

Find the files on the hard drive.

Single click on each file to highlight the file name in the box. Edit it to suit. And save.

One at a time, so make a cuppa first.

By default MSwindow's file explorer "hides the file extension for known file types"

If I could find the words to express my opinion of that design decision it wouldn't get past the word filter so I won't even try  >:( >:( >:(

If you have a file called "Mydocument.jpeg.docx" then windows hides the ".docx" and you see "Mydocument.jpeg"

A file called "takemyfileshostage.docx.exe" will appear as "takemyfileshostage.docx"

There is a check box in file explorer so you can turn off "hide file extension for known file types". Turn that 'feature' OFF before trying to change any file extensions

Assuming you have Microsoft office installed?

Ive seen similar a few times lately, easiest fix has been to go to control panel, programs and features, find MS Office in the list and click repair, this will fix any corruption and reasociate the files correctly.

I suspect their association has changed rather than the actual files, making this look worse than it is.

You don't always get the option of Repair, just Uninstall or Change.

Yes AA, all I got was the option to Uninstall. However, I think I've cracked it: I right-clicked on a letter in my folder and selected something (cannot remember what) and suddenly they all became Word documents! Phew!
Thanks gents.

I've never seen all of Microsoft software so neatly summed up, in just one sentence, too.  ;D

I agree 100%. It has been over a year since Hotmail blocked my original email address that I had owned for nearly 30 years because of seemingly unauthorised activity.
I have made numerous attempts to convince them that I am the real me and I do own the account, giving email contacts, etc. to the best of my memory, but the b*ggers are incalcitrant. Could TB cull thr lot of them?  >:( >:( >:(
