Omega General Help / Metal coolant pipe.
« on: 20 February 2011, 13:14:10 »
Just been out this morning trying to find my leak, had the scuttle & plenum off and prodded around.

The symptom is leaking from the passenger rear side, running down the block dripping off close to the exhaust. I've checked the HBV and pipes & the pipes into the bridge all look OK.

While looking I did discover that it is actually dripping when cold, now as the pipe from the header immediately drops down to the metal pipe that runs the back of the engine that must be the problem?

Does this sound correct and does anyone know exactly what needs to come off to access it? (I have my old CDX stripped to the bridge and still cant see it there so i'm guessing this is a real pig of a job  :()

Omega General Help / White spots in header tank, HG or other?
« on: 16 February 2011, 09:05:00 »
Now I realise HG's are usually bulletproof  :) but i'm just after a quick check. A couple of days back I started losing water (It's running off the block on the rear passenger side) and have been topping up daily until I get to look at it on the weekend.

This morning after top up I noticed small spots of white bobbing around on top of the header tank. Is this likely to be HG or oil cooler? The cooler was change about 2-3 yrs ago.

Cheers

Omega General Help / Heater question/possible leak
« on: 28 October 2010, 19:53:55 »
Driving home tonight I did 20 of the 25 miles then got stuck in a huge jam on the M4, we crawled along at 5-10mph. About 1/2 a mile from getting off the aircon which had been set at 20c suddenly started to blow colder, the outside temp guage appeared to move from 18c to 19.5c. I upped the temp but it didn't seem to have much effect until just before max upon which it blew hot.

What I noticed but may have been in my mind was the heat felt humid, also i'm sure I got a smell of hot water/anti-freeze.

Didn't overheat, no loss of coolant warning, oh and I did think the PAS felt sluggish when I parked. Too dark to have a look but can anyone suggest where to start looking tomorrow?

Omega General Help / Will FL headlights fit a MFL?
« on: 20 September 2010, 13:43:28 »
For a while now i've been considering rubbing down the headlights on my MFL as they are very discoloured. When I looked at my scrapper FL the lights are a lot better condition, so I started to look at them side by side and thought the FL ones might have a more extended top 'lip'. Without unnecessary stripping down does anyone know if they will fit and look OK?

Omega General Help / Taking a guess, is it dead?
« on: 11 September 2010, 23:22:06 »
So, the week before last I pass my MOT, last week I go to devon for a week, today I return home on a tow truck >:(

This is very much self inflicted but I started to lose water, 5-6 litres over 25 miles, called the recovery and it turns out they sold me the cheapskate cover with only 25 miles free. They then proceeded to quote me 600 quid to get back!! As that's more than the car is worth I got 15 litres of water and started to top up every 20 miles, I made it to 60 miles out and a £120 recovery bill.

At that point I couldn't find a stop and climbing a hill I had a cloud of smoke and steam come out the back. Made it into a layby but as I stopped it just died, opened the bonnet to find it had 0 water and was engulfed in smoke/steam, any water that was added just poured out the back. While waiting for the flatbed it cooled down so I tried spinning it over, it turns but now makes no attempt to fire, it also sounds like it's turning fast.

Previously I assumed I was leaking from the oil cooler/bridge but now i'm wondering if I have taken out the head gaskets and I assume warped the heads.

What do you reckon and what should I check tomorrow?

Omega General Help / More handbrake questions
« on: 28 August 2010, 21:26:15 »
Finally managed to finish replacing my handbrake shoes on both sides, freed up the rusted adjusters/mechanisms and adjusted the star wheels.

Now i've noticed that when I pull the handbrake on only one side of the cable moves, i'm assuming the cable has seized.

What i'm wondering, is there any chance that I can free the cable and if so where is it likely to be siezed? Also if the cable isn't recoverable do you really need to loosen the exhaust off to replace it as per Haynes?

Omega General Help / Front strut tightening
« on: 21 August 2010, 18:46:19 »
Ok so i'm patting myself on the back here, just replaced both struts and drop links and it was a lot easier than I expected (apart from the part where Halfrauds ripped me off for a 24mm spanner  >:( ) All that knocking has now gone  :)

I ignored the Haynes suggestion of removing the pads and caliper in favour of removing the top caliper bolt and suspending the disc unit on my trolley jack, that was so much easier  :y

The question I have though is how do you properly torque up the top bolt (cant use a torque wrench because you need to hold it with an allen key) and the lower drop link (can't get any leverage because it's only a 1/4 inch movement on the ratchet)? They are as tight as I can get (which is normally a 1/4 turn past breaking point!) and it feels ok but when I bounce it I can see the top plate move a little.

Omega General Help / Front struts, are they handed?
« on: 20 August 2010, 13:17:41 »
I've got a cheap pair of Bilsteins ready for collection from Euro Car Parts but they show as the same unit for both sides where GM list them as different numbers LH & RH, is there a difference?

Omega General Help / Estate rear seat centre mount
« on: 17 August 2010, 10:05:57 »
I mentioned a few weeks back that my estate has the rear centre belt missing, my plan was to replace it or the seats. Unfortunately my cash is now being used on the MOT so I need a bodge.

Simply put when I attempt to fold the seats down they don't lay flat, they twist inwards. I pulled the lower pad and spotted that the centre bracket that secures the seats to the floorpan is a mass of bent and ripped metal (I assume it has seized at some point).

The question is can you easily replace that bracket or is it integral to one side of the seat. I would normally just remove it to check but i'm off on holiday in Sept and dont want to get them out and find I cant get them back in.

Omega General Help / More handbrake questions
« on: 15 August 2010, 17:04:58 »
So I spent 3hrs under the car this afternoon pretty much to no avail as my baby trolley jack cant lift the car high enough to get it on max axle stand height  >:( I got the heat shields off OK, managed to see the adjuster and soak it in oil but just couldn't get enough access to get a socket on, also I span the hubs on both sides but couldn't see the star adjusters at all.

One thing I did spot though was the adjusting bracket was very heavily angled towards the offside a bit like this.

I'm assuming this means that the adjusters on one side are stuck? If so I guess I might as well just get a set of shoes and replace the lot anyway?

Omega General Help / MOT failure questions
« on: 11 August 2010, 15:21:56 »
So I took it in today and got a fail ticket  >:( exhaust, front shock, tyre and handbrake.

Tyre is done, exhaust will be eternalcar, that leaves 2 questions.

Does anyone have any cheap recommendations for a new pair of front shocks? (I did toy with a wanted ad but unless they are obviously newish there's no point risking it)

As the handbrake failed on both sides do you think that will be the cable needing adjusting or new shoes and is there an easy way to check that doesn't involve stripping it apart?

More importantly why do I need a handbrake when I have park  :P

Omega General Help / Estate centre seat belt
« on: 29 July 2010, 09:23:34 »
OK this is embarrassing, I have this old beater estate I bought a month ago, needs a couple of minor jobs but otherwise usable.

Last night my daughter sits in the car and says "where's the middle seat belt?" I say ahh maybe it got trapped when someone last put the seats down, I take a look and there's nothing! The plastic insert is in the top of the seat, the clip is in place in the base but no belt.

So, how easy is it to replace? I only took a quick look but I assume it must run through the seat itself?

Not something I wanted to find out at 9 o'clock last night  ::)

Omega General Help / Suspension knock
« on: 12 July 2010, 13:30:56 »
On my CDX estate I have a knock from the suspension over even slightly rough roads, I also noticed yesterday it has taken the nsf tyre down to the metalwork.

I have now ordered new wishbones and drop links but was wondering if there is any other part that could cause this noise/effect that I should look at while down there. The previous owner has had the steering arm replaced and i've not bothered with tracking as it's a waste of money in the current state.

Cheers
Baz

Omega General Help / Drop link question
« on: 30 June 2010, 10:31:48 »
Just picked up a cheap mig and it has the knock from the front suspension on rough roads. I'm assuming it is drop links so was wondering if we have any recommended cheap suppliers? Also should I just assume wishbones are gone as well and do them at the same time, and of course any preferred supplier?

Realistically i'm not interested in longevity as I plan to sort my Elite over the next 2-3 months and then just sell this on, I am of course not interested in using dangerous pattern parts  :)
