The standard speakers are excellent, if they sound too "bassy" turn down the bass! ;)

Seriously though, what system is in the car?

It's the factory CDR 500, which works ok, but I would like to play MP3s so if I fitted a new head unit I would lose the dash display ( just the clock, radio & outside temp type) any advice?...thnx ..Phil :-/

If you replace factory HU, you will lose steeriing controls, and display, unless you buy a new unit with remote control, and display out, then you can buy an adaptor to retain all this.

Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony and Alpine all do some

I have a Pioneer Bluetooth enabled headunit, and bought the adaptor, all works well, but the display is a bit limited, you get radio station names, but only a counter for cd track, and no phone numbers etc on phone side.

The steering wheel controls are ivaluable so I'd recommend getting the adaptor for those. However the display is a waste of time IMO, it's only a 10(?) character dot-matrix so doesn't come anywhere near the level of information a modern unit can display, such as artist, album and song title information as well as the track time and number etc.

The difference in sound with a decent aftermarket unit is very noticeable and recommended.
What headunit you go for is down to budget... we can recommend some though.

Worry not about the display, you will still have time outside temp and trip computer display.

Since you have the same model as me, you'll lose the radio display only.  The swap is very straightforward tbh, only thing you may like to do is swap over the 2 positive (red) leads as vauxhall in their infinate wisdom differed slightly from the iso standard.  By swapping these over, you'll be able to turn on the radio without the ignition on.  Hope this is useful?  :y
