Recently, a garage relatively local to me had a 'surprise' visit by VOSA and the car logged on the MOT system at the time supposedly being tested was in fact at a different site owned by the same garage......

Ooops!

Yep,big oops that one,I'd imagine they are looking into other means of earning revenue now !!
depends how the site (garage) was set up and the hierarchy of management
could just be one scapegoat  NT loosing his privilege/job and some sanctions on the site

The Gov cant make up their minds on 25th of March they said this "All cars, vans and motorcycles which usually would require an MOT test will be exempted from needing a test from 30 March 2020. Vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition, and garages will remain open for essential repair work. Drivers can be prosecuted if driving unsafe vehicles." Now they say you need a test? unless expired post 30th march. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-owners-to-be-granted-mot-exemption-in-battle-against-coronavirus

Both statements are the same.

If your MoT expires after 30/3/20, it has been extended 6 months.

If it expired before this date, it needs testing before it can legally be used on the roads.

Simples ::)

Are parts still readily available to the trade?

If wifey's car breaks down, the dealer will fix it as they are open for key workers. If mine does, I'm fooked.

Depending on how long this goes on for, I will be getting my MOT wherever possible, as I have always tried to keep the MOT date coinciding with the date of registration. A relatively minor point in the overall scheme of things, but delaying for a few months, legally or otherwise, would throw the date out of sync.. Alternatively, I suppose, the following year I could do it early to get it back on track......

Yes pretty much, all of the the factors down here are still trading albeit with slimmed workforce,most of the main dealers here have shut though
