Hi all

Looking for some advice/help I have a 2002 2.2CD Auto Saloon which I have owned since August 2003. The engine management light is on and the fault code is P0700 which I understand to be a general gearbox fault code. The gearbox 99.9% of the time is fine but every now and again, only when started, goes into limp mode. If I switch the ignition of and restart it’s fine but the code will not clear, so at present only using for local journeys. Looking for possible causes and remedies.

Replace the cam sensor with a genuine one from a genuine Vauxhall dealer that you genuinely have to walk in to... *

The GM Vauxhall part number for the 2.2 16v cam position sensor is 90520850.

This sensor was widely used on contemporary Astras, so you might strike lucky with a dealer that has old stock but it might well be that it's a special order from Germany. Expect seven working days to deliver, payment up-front and no returns. That's assuming you can find a dealer that still has a parts department, knows what a special order is and is willing to place it.

It won't be cheap. £100 wouldn't surprise me.

The GM part is a standard Siemens part and both the Siemens and GM originals are marked 5WK96052. So if you luck out with the dealer try and get a genuine Siemens part. IE not a Siemens equivalent. Parts supplied by Continental and branded VDO are likely to be the genuine Siemens.

Worth reading the gearbox codes, before spending money on parts, as it may be a genuine gearbox fault, of which there are a few common ones with easy fixes.
