Car reving by itself
« on: 20 December 2016, 10:38:05 »

Hi my 2.2dti has just started reving by itself now and again when idling the revs jump up for a second then everything settles does it maybe once every couple of days I was wondering if its anything to do with the emissions light coming on for maybe 10 minutes in a morning? Thanks.

Oil was just below maximum when I checked earlier.

Would be inclined to check stored codes for the light coming on. My first thoughts would be gummed up EGR or cat being fouled by soot. When the revs alter have a look to see if you get an equivalent puff of black smoke out the back. Depending on what the codes say, a good stiff dose of fuel system cleaner, cat cleaner and clean out the EGR would be 3 fairly cheap places to start.

Checked for codes and no codes stored in ECU, just put some cataclean through with reccomended fuel ratio and drove for a while seemed fine driving earlier light came on and loss of power for 5 mins then suddenly back to normal and seems to have cleared going to try some egr cleaner is the one you squirt into the airline any good also is egr easily accessible on the 2.2?

EGR is accessible on the 2.2. I clean mine with carb cleaner and a selection of small brushes +/- screwdrivers for scraping the hard crud off the housing, just be careful around the solenoid/plunger area. You could also try giving the car a damn good thrashing, it's a DTi, you wont be going very fast. Do check for the smoke out the back when it misbehaves, it's a hint to the air/fuel ratio going out which the ECU may be trying to compensate for. Whilst you're checking, make sure the throttle body is nice and clean and there are no splits in the the intake/rebreathing pipes.

Did you fit a genuine GM sensor from a GM dealer?
