Omega General Help / Oil cooler wanted for 2.5/3.0 V6
« on: 02 September 2023, 17:38:26 »
I am rebuilding a 2.5 V6 engine and need a new oil cooler. They seems hard to find. Does anybody have a recommended source?

The later stainless type is preferred. I want new but may have to compromise with a used part if it looks in good condition. Thanks.

Omega General Help / Omega X30XE emissions problem
« on: 14 April 2023, 11:54:33 »

Hi guys, Derek Thomson here from GM6 Spares in Penzance. I need help!

I have rebuilt an Omega 3.0 Elite estate engine very carefully from the block up and put the car through MOT back in November 2022
It passed on emissions but failed on some rust that I had overlooked.
By late February the work was done and the car retested but it failed on emissions. For reasons unknown the C0 was suddenly way too high.
We fitted new downpipes and cats, with new lambda sensors, also a new idle air valve.
The car was retested, but it failed again, with the C0 showing 9.65% at fast idle
Gunsons Colourtune thing shows yellow combustion flame so it is running way too rich
I changed the MAF sensor for one off another car and compared the readings on my Snap-on Ethos scanner. They were the same so I assume that both are in good working order. The Tech 2 shows no fault codes neither does the Ethos scanner.
I am now going to change the temperature sensor as I know that these can cause rich running if faulty or if the incorrect one is fitted.
All the vacuum pipes are correctly fitted and I cannot find any air leaks in the various pipes and ducts.

I have wondered if there is a fuel pressure problem, on other cars I have worked on eg Opel Monzas the return pipe into the fuel tank can get blocked with sludge, resulting in high fuel pressure and very rich running. Or the fuel pressure regulator can go faulty. The engine ECU can get wet and damaged, causing very rich running.

Are the engine ECUs prone to go faulty on Omegas?

If anyone can suggest anything else I should check it would be appreciated as I am at my wit's end with this car. The annoying thing is that the engine passed with no problem back in November and the car has only done 50 miles since then, mainly to and from the MOT garage multiple times! So something seems to have gone faulty while the car has been sat idle, and I have no idea what it could be.

Hello guys,

What brand(s) of head gasket set are recommended for an X30XE head job? I know that Victor Reinz are one of the best, and I believe original equipment, but what thoughts does anybody have about Payen, Ajusa, Glaser etc? What is recommended and what is best avoided?
I'm sure this must have been discussed in past threads but I can't find any.

Many thanks for any advice.

Can anybody tell me whether X25XE and X30XE auto gearbox differences pre and post chassis V1999999 are important?

I have a pre-V1999999 auto gearbox for a 3.0 V6 to go in a later chassis number (a Y chassis number).
The Vauxhall electronic parts catalogue shows different part numbers but I can't see any chassis breaks for the internal components, just the control ECU. I assume that the change programming is just slightly different and that for all practical purposes there is no difference between pre and post V1999999 gearboxes for the 2.5 and 3.0 cars.

Any advice gratefully received! Thanks.

Meetings, gatherings, parties etc / Cornwall & Devon area meets?

Are there any regular meetings of OOF members in the Cornwall and Devon area? Preferably somewhere central like Plymouth?

I hope nobody minds me asking this but I receive occasional enquiries from Omega B owners: will an Opel Monza limited slip diff fit into an Omega B ? (I dismantle Monzas and on most UK cars, including the Monza GSE an LSD came as standard).
Threy came in two ratios on the 2.8 and 3.0 cars; 3.15:1 and 3.45:1

I assume there might be two options: the Monza LSD unit itself onto Omega B crownwheel or Monza combo straight in. I know that the outer casings are very different although the output drive shafts are essentially the same and I imagine that the input shaft and pinion is probably very similar.

If anybody knows the answer it would be appreciated! I could try it myself but it would be very time consuming, especially getting a diff off a scrap Omega only to find that the Monza internals don't fit. If someone has already tried this I'd love to hear about it.Thanks!

As I'm a  newbie to these cars I'd like a clarification of what I've found on my '98 Elite 3.0 estate mini-facelift please!

It appears to have the CCR800 stereo with Bose. I'vwe found a Bose speaker in the boot on the LH side behind a carpeted door in the inner rear quarter. There is a 6-CD player on the other side. There doesn't seem to be a matching RH speaker. Have I missed it? Also, the EPC parts catalogue shows an amplifier in the tailgate. Is this correct?

I have to say that the system sounds very, very good.

So I've just bought a CDX 2.5 saloon with the CCRT700 head unit in it and the phone setup. It works very well, but it's a nuisance having to take the SIM card out of my mobile and fit it into the car unit. Is it possible to have a duplicate SIM card made up, obviously with the same phone number? That way I'd have ...aargh, just realised a major problem. I can't see the same phone number being activated in two places simultaneously, ie both mobile and car phones working at the same time. Or does the mobile phone system prevent this, allowing calls to or from only one handset/car phone at a time?

Omega General Help / Steering drag link -pre '99 and post '99
« on: 24 June 2009, 15:13:04 »
Is there any difference between the steering drag link/centre tie bar of pre-facelift/mini facelift cars and the facelift ones? Or are they interchangeable? Thanks.

Omega General Help / Auto gearbox fault codes on N-reg 2.5
« on: 10 June 2009, 18:14:10 »
Hello -can anybody tell me which pins to bridge for doing the paperclip test on an auto gearbox on an N-reg 2.5? I have the fault codes for the AR35 gearbox as used on a Senator B, and I assume that they will be the same for the variant of the AR35 used on the Omega. But I can't find any information on which pins to bridge in the diagnostic socket. Can anybody help? Thanks!

Omega General Help / Low compressions again
« on: 04 November 2008, 20:18:29 »
OK, different car, but it looks like V6 Omegas make a habit of this.

2.5 Elite estate, S-reg, 142k miles, running lumpy and lacking power. No water in oil. Compression test shows 225 psi on all cylinders RH side, 225 on LH front, 160 & 140 on the two rear LH pots.

Plugholes on RH side had a bit of oil in them, those on LH side dry as a bone. I was hoping that maybe it was just misfires due to oil, but obviously not.

So this is not dissimilar to my R-reg 3.0 Elite estate + LPG, albeit not quite as bad.

I'm not really asking for any help, just passing comment really, in the hope that someone might say "Yes, they all do that!". Then at least I might know what to do -scrap it most likely!

Omega General Help / A question about "V6 head gasket gone or not"
« on: 20 October 2008, 20:43:29 »
I nearly posted this on that thread but then thought better of it.

The cylinder head photo on that thread prompts me to ask how common is it for one of the head gaskets to blow a leak between two cylinders, ie at the narrowest point between the bores?

I think my 3.0 Omega estate is suffering from this, as I have low compressions on two adjacent cylinders, but no sign of excessive coolant pressurisation or oil in water/water in oil. It runs very rough -like a bag of nails in fact.

This follows up my thread on this problem some weeks ago -I've been too busy to take the engine apart, although I must do so soon so that I can fix the problem and get my LPG estate back on the road.

Omega 3.0 Estate '98 mini-facelift auto with LPG
-------------------------------------------------------

My saga continues...

Having fixed the ABS, got it through the MOT etc, and enjoyed three weeks of driving around, running perfectly, the car broke down at the end of a 30-mile run up the A30 and is now stuck in a suburban road (I am getting it recovered).

Symptoms: misfiring -at first as if missing just one cylinder, then I realised it was maybe two or even three, loss of power, alarming tinkling sound from engine.

Open bonnet, find a  rubber pipe to secondary air injection solenoid valve split. Repair it with masking tape but makes no difference. Do paperclip test. It shows:

98  O2 sensor 2 circuit voltage low
38   02 sensor 1 ditto
16 Knock signal circuit 1
17 knock signal circuiit 2

and 31 -engine not running

Any ideas please? I'm assuming that something has gone wrong with the lambda circuit and the ECU is advancing the ignition, hence the tinkling sounds as engine knocks.

Symptoms are the same whether it runs on LPG or petrol. I was running on LPG at the time of the breakdown.

I'm away to the car for some hours so I can't respond to any helpful posts but if anybody can suggest anything to look for or check I'd really appreciate it. I'm fearing maybe the injection ECU has gone down but as I am a newbie to these cars I don't really know.

Thank you!

re: Omega 3.0 V6 Estate April 1998 mini-facelift , 166,000 miles

According to the service history my cam belt was done at 137,000 miles. I've been panicking thinking that it must be changed at 40,000 miles, but the Haynes manual says that 1997 model-year cars on have the modified tensioner assembly which permits a longer service interval of 80,000 miles. Is this correct?

If so, it is good news, as I've been bracing myself to do the job, fearing that even though I have 10,000 miles to go, it could break at any minute.

Footnote -after all my problems, that took eight weeks to resolve, the car is running perfectly, so far as I can tell. Fast, powerful, smooth, luxurious motoring for next to no money (£365 off eBay plus ABS ECU and various other more minor jobs and an MOT), so I am well pleased. Driving 200 miles for £24.50 of LPG is what I call cheap motoring!
