Steering Wheel Control Wires
« on: 20 April 2007, 22:42:06 »

Hiya Chaps

I wonder if anyone can help I am making my steering wheel controls control my car audio software on my in car computer by using a usb gamepad

This link will help explain

http://www.stevieg.org/carpc/install/building/#swc

I need to know where the wires end from the steering wheel controls so i can connect them to the usb gamepad.

If someone knows which wires connect to which buttons on the sterring wheel ?

Thanks

Craig

There are only two wires and a set of resistors so pressing each button presents a different resistance to the audio device.....and given that its fed via the column squib.....adding extra wires is not an option

Ahhhh Bugger

I wonder if i can make a module of some sorts to get around this ie wire comes from controls enters module which has six wires out.
but i doubt it i am not that clever.

so there is no chance of adding wires because of the column squib ?

Your best chance of getting that into a PC would be to use an analogue input of some kind. Maybe a joystick port? Depends what the software you're using supports, of course.

It wouldn't be impossible to decode the signal into individual outputs but it would be a bit of work. Could do it with a PIC or AVR microcontroller with an analogue input and a handful of digital outputs.

or a few comparators or transistors......you know, real electronics ;)

True.  :)

And while it seems easier to write a few lines of code than to electron-herd at that level I suspect if I were to try and get my head round the PIC instruction set again I'd drive myself insane.

The basic PIC instruction set can be written on a fag packet!

Right Think I have Found what I need to control the PC from the Steering Wheel Controls

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/input-devices/25690-steering-wheel-controls.html

All I need to know now is which Wires are for Steering 1 set of controls and Steering 2 set of controls

I am rubbish at soldering so this should be fun Grrr lol

There is only a single wire for all 6 buttons....its on pin 4 at the rear of the steering wheel squib....Blue/Red stripe.....as each switch is pressed it presents a different resistance to this wire......the other side of the switches/resistor combinations are already connected to 0V
