Firmer suspension on facelifts?
« on: 22 December 2007, 20:05:59 »

The roads around where I live are truly awful (rural Licolnshire) very bumpy and badly repaired, the main drag to work is a test of any cars suspension. My facelift 2.2 seems to very firm compared with my pre-facelift 2.0, it thumps and bumps like an old Transit, my old motor used to absorb the irregularities much better. Car has new springs and shocks, wishbones and droplinks, can't seem to get it to ride as smoothly as it should, which is the main reason i bought another meega because my old one was such a comfortable ride.
Just wondering if the facelifts are like this anyway?

my facelift is noticably bumpy on bad roads, but suspension still feels soft compared to most modern FWD rubbish I drive...

Thanks James. I think it's fantastic on motorways, firm but smooth, but awfully bumpy on the cart tracks we call roads around here. I agree though that it's better than most of the 'wrong wheel drive' I've driven. My Dads' newish Nisssan Primera is right boneshaker, my mates' new Passat is diabolical, hard as nails, and my sisters 2 year old Vectra is unbelievably harsh and noisy.

Is it just because its newer, so the springs and shocks will naturally be firmer?

Yeah, i suppose it might soften up a bit when it's all bedded down. It could be also that I'm used to driving big yank tanks which are very soft, they seem to float above the road on a cushion of air even though their suspension set ups are very crude and basic.

I know the suspension on my 3.0 Elite facelift is quite a bit firmer than my mini-facelift 2.5CDX that it replaced. Old one was on 150k new on 70k which may explain it, but even when the old one only had 90k it was very much a wallowy barge whereas the new one is much taughter. It will also have something to do with the wheels . Old was smaller (15 or 16 cant remember which) with fairly high profile tyres, new is 17 with lower profiles which always give a harder ride. Dont notice it on most roads apart from the A422 to buckingham which is just a mass of potholes and ruts , old CDX used to glide over them, I do notice them more in the Elite.

European cars have springs, not leaf spring jelly!  ;)
