General Discussion Area / well that's the carpet shagged
« on: 22 January 2014, 00:07:03 »
It seems the plumber has done a half-arsed job as the cold water feed under the bath has been leaking, it would appear for some time.  The only reason I know about is because the water has come through the wall and soaked the bedroom.  I cant even turn the mains off as when I do the stop-cock leaks!!!

So the towels are out to try and soak it up while a bowl is catching the water. Although I will have to stay up and empty it every hour  >:(

Not a happy bunny.  The developer had better honour the guarantee.

Anybody have experience of installing one of these?  I am considering it for the side of the house but I am not sure about planning permission etc.  They look pretty straight-forward to do and I have a spotty trainee surveyor/CAD expert living with me for the next few weeks so I would like to utilise his expertise if I can :y

Advice anyone?

General Discussion Area / Vacuum cleaner caught fire!
« on: 08 January 2014, 10:11:23 »
In the interests of harmony, Standard Operating Procedure in our house when the other is away is to clean before they get back.  The missus was working a trip and after the move the house was looking a little neglected so I spent hours sprucing everything up and doing loads of small DIY jobs that I had not yet gotten around to.  Jetlag makes one even more grumpy than usual.

So after brushing up the floor in the kitchen, being a lad and instead of using a dustpan and brush, I decided to use the vacuum cleaner.  2 biords with one stone, I vacuum the lounge and then suck up the pile of debris in the kitchen.  Easy.

Except that the vacuum was obviously p!$$ed off at this extra chore and decided to start spluttering sparks and smoke out the back!  So now the lounge was still unvacumed, the pile of debris needed to be scooped up, the house stinks of acrid smoke and there is a slight burn mark on the new carpet.  Joys!  Thankfully the missus was understanding and enough brownie points had been earned doing the other chores ::)

So now I am in the market for a new vacuum.  Space is limited so I am tempted by these slim upright rechargable ones, there is a spot in the lounge I can hide it behind a door.  Anyone have this or similar and can provide feedback?  Budget is a little tight following the move as the solicitors, the bank and Ikea have swallowed most of the last 3 paycheques :'(

General Discussion Area / Found a TIS/EPC cd
« on: 29 December 2013, 11:25:05 »
Is anyone missing a TIS and EPC cd? In the move I found one but I dont remember ever buying one and my name is not on the address label. I can only think that someone left it behind at one of the cambelt meets and I picked it up. I dont recognise the name either otherwise I wouldn't be posting here.

I am putting up some shelves in the kitchen in to a false wall (plasterboard wall protruding in to the kitchen) next 5o my combi boiler which is mounted on the same false wall.

Drilling through the plasterboard I have hit something hard and I want make sure I am not going to damage anything by drilling through it.  It seems like it could a fibreglass support mounted behind the plasterboard for the boiler but I am a little concerned about what it is. I do t want to drill a pipe.  My stud detector says there isn't any electric wiring there but it cannot detect pipes.  The metal detector goes off but then it is within 6 inches of the boiler.

I have drilled exploration holes leading away from the boiler and this thing stops about 11 I ches away from the boiler.

so the question is, what is it and can I drill it?

Well that's the missus and I in our new place, which is our first home  8)

Downsizing is not fun, even worse when coupled with a move.  Going from a 3 bed with a garage to a 2-bed without meant getting rid of a lot of stuff as well as building a large shed with a concrete base, painting most of the walls due to a dubious colour choice by the developers and dealing with the incompetence of Sky BB and Virgin Media call-centre staff.

Now I am connected to the Net @ 104/9.4MB I am very excited about being able to watch films on demand at last!  My last place had 1.4/0.5MB on a good day.  Plus the Leaf has a proper charging point now and can make full use of the 16A charger rather than the 10A I was using resulting in faster turnaround after the regular trips to Heathrow.

The only problem is that all the stress has turned me a little bit more grey and being the only one who could really carry anything heavy means my back is f.......... :(

But, very happy to finally be a homeowner :y

[Rant on]

I am in the midst of getting things ready for moving house which has turned in to a complex project with amoung other things includes co-ordinating:

- Delivery of hardcore, and other materials for laying the shed base
- hire of necessary equipment for making the base
- hire of van to move belongings
- March-out of the current MOD house
- organising cleaners
- etc, etc

One of the easiest things was making sure that there is an overlap in internet access between the two dwellings so that I can continue working from home, but even this easy task was too difficult for one numpty at Sky.  Instead of my current broadband carrying on until Friday, it stopped this morning which means I cannot work from home.  This is not a dig at Sky because the lady I spoke to this morning was very understanding and it sound like she was as upset as I was about the situation.  She could not reconnect me either as the order at the exchange had gone through.  So I am buggered using my mobile phone as a hotspot but being in MOD housing means I am in a comms poo-hole >:(

Then there is the solicitors.  When I have questions I send an email, then another, then I call and leave 2 messages, eventually I have to go down to the offices and sit there.  I know that all the monies will be ready the day before the sale but they are adamant that completion will take place around 1-2pm.......!   There is no reason why it cannot go through earlier but I now risk the installation of the FO in the new house as the engineers are due to arrive in the afternoon.

Grrrrrr, grrr and double grrrrrr!!  >:( >:( >:( >:(

[rant off]

Ok the title is a little dramatic and so is the language in the article, I am a little disappointed there seems to be little scientific research in to the claims but if true it would explain a lot of problems people have.

I stopped drinking it a long time ago, switching to full-fat.  I have stopped drinking that too because of the sugar used to make it (except for post outdoor swimming sessions, but that's another thing entirely)

England are taking on France in the 1/4 finals in the Rugby League World Cup.  Working for a french company this makes for a fantastic atmosphere.

We are joint hosts with the french this time around although you wouldn't have guessed it by the lack of TV coverage.

General Discussion Area / Shed base questions
« on: 05 November 2013, 20:21:30 »
When I move in to the new place (eventually >:() I need to fit a shed in the garden PDQ.  The shed will be 10x8 and I will be laying a concrete base.  I have been reading up o a few things and I understand that:

- I need a compacted sub-base which is 100mm thick and which extends 300mm wider than the concrete area,
- I need to put a damp-proof membrane between sub-base and the concrete and this should extend over the wood frame,
- The concrete should be 100mm thick and level.

I hope to get in to the house in the next couple of weeks but by then I fear the temperature would be too low to lay concrete:

- Would the low temperature affect something as simple as a shed base?
- Would it affect the structure/load-bearing (not that important as it is just a shed)
- How can I lay the concrete in colder temperatures?  throw tarpaulin over it and stick a space heater under that?  :-\

I am posting this on behalf of on our french members who got in touch with me recently.

Since changing the battery there is no longer any sound coming from his speakers whether using the radio CD or navgation.  He gets the radio Hz displayed so it cant be a code issue.  The radio is a Siemens NCDC 2013 (not sure if that is an original or not but I assume so) and the car is a 2000 3.0.  I have offered my help to translate for him so answering any questions may take a little longer :y
