Hi guys,

I am hoping to pickup a new gearbox this week and I want to try and fit it (along with the diff bolts that fell out) this weekend.

However I have never changed an auto box before and my wife is fantastic at everything BUT car maintenance (I have to say that its my anniversary   ;)

Is there anyone with experience willing to help on saturday for a handful of beer tokens...

I think a day will do, no?

General Discussion Area / Off topic - 214 hesitates when cold
« on: 11 February 2008, 08:06:03 »
Hi fellas,

I am now back from Iraq and the wife has wasted no time getting me to fix things.

One is her rover 214 (which we are getting rid of soon) which idles ok when cold but if you put the gas on it will hesitate until it gets warm and then the engine runs fine.

I havent had alook under the bonnet yet but I am thinking some sort of temperature sensor linked to the fuel management?  :-/

Any thought from the experts?  :D

As always, muchos gracias!! 8-)

General Discussion Area / Off Topic - Small 12V petrol generator
« on: 31 January 2008, 03:22:11 »
Hi guys,

This post is more about my second hobby which is sailing and, recently, building boats.  I am building a 11 foot dinghy at the moment which I hope to use as both a sailing boat AND a fishing boat.

I am also eco-aware when it comes to the sea (dont get me started on rubbish on the beach) which obviously means I will be getting an electric trolling engine run off a 12V battery.  Even with the latest motors one 12V battery may not do the trick and if I am on a fishing weekend covering some large distance on the English south or German coastlines I will have to recharge it at some point.

I have thought about a bank of batteries but looking at the design I would not be able to fit more than 2 and then the electrics can get ... well...interesting....  Besides I would feel safer if I had a hydrocarbon backup system as well as my obvious sails to fall back on.

I am looking at using a very small 25-50cc engine rigged up with an alternator that I can use for recharging the battery.

Has anyone seen/done this before?  Got any thoughts?  Will a 50cc be big enough to turn the alternator at sufficient speed? before I start getting things pointlessly welded...?

Hi guys!

Miss me?  Well I'm not quiet back from the sandbox yet but I will be soon with plenty of tales which I cant tell you about online.

I will be putting a post in the wanted section but I may as well cover it here as I need a replacement (working) gearbox for my P reg Omega Auto.  I remember James had one some time ago but I doubt he still has it.

Drop me a pm if you have one you want to get rid of, oh, and belated Hapy New Year!

General Discussion Area / Has anyone tried building their own boat?
« on: 03 September 2007, 11:09:30 »
As if I wasn't busy enough I have looked into the possibility of building my own sail boat from plywood using the stitch and glue technique.

I have plans for a 17' sailboat with comprehensive cut-out plans (which I hope to get done by a pro if the price is right) detailled instructions on slapping the wood together et al and also plans for a smaller dingy sail boat.

I am quite handy, have a wide range of tools, worked with wood before building bespoke wardrobes and solid wood flooring, etc

Has anyone tried this before, any tips, advice, pointers, encouragement would be much appreciated.

Hiya peeps,

I have to go to Catterick from Wiltshire on Thursday and I am not expecting an easy drive.  I usually take A303, A34, A43, M1.

Obviously that is going to cause me probs.  Short of going up A419/A417, M5, M6, M62, M1 and leaving wednesday am I think I am pretty buggered.

Any ideas?  Muchos apprecios amigos!

General Discussion Area / name change?
« on: 22 May 2007, 14:52:47 »
Hi moderators,

I was wondering, I joined using a rather boring name.  I obviously sign off as gaffers which is my nickname and it rolls off the tongue better than gaffney.

Any chance I can modify my screen name at all? Or am I stuck with a boring name?
