CDR2005 / Double din radio ???
« on: 16 August 2014, 21:45:57 »

Hi,
Has any one had experience in updating the radio in an Omega,
I currently have a CDR2005 which works perfectly fine. The car
is a 2003 2.2 CD in excellent original condition with only 29K
on the clock from new.

I`ve been looking at some of the touchscreen double din radio`s,
e.g. Pioneer SPH-DA100 as a sat nav function would be useful.
I assume I will have to purchase some sort of surround for it to
fit correctly, but I`d rather stick with the original if it will spoil
the interior look of the car, or lose some dash / steering functions.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thx, Dave.

Been thinking along the same lines.

Depending on what display you have (TID, MID, GID, CID), you could loose the time/date, station information, navigation, steering wheel control of the display..

The steering wheel controls can be connected to the new stereo via an interface box.

I exchanged my original stereo out of the omega for a aftermarket.
X Tron
With sat nav, bluetooth, TV, DVD, mp3/4, and so on.
I can't use the steering wheel option but I don't use them in the company car to.
The dashboard display which shows you track, radio frequency etc will be blank,
Connection on ISO is very simple
All I needed to do was the 2 supply feeds reconnect.
For the surrounding, yes it's a nightmare getting one, but it did my own with some foam material and resprayed it black.
May not the 100% look option but I accept this and can cope with it.

At least I have now what I wanted and what I had in other cars.
The original was a bit out of date and only worked half of it.

I bought a Kenwood double din unit, Omega facia trim with the cage and patch leads for the steering wheel remote controls. First job was to cut the locking tabs from the Kenwood cage and bond them in the correct place in the one that came with the facia trim as the Kenwood cage won`t work with the trim.

It`s a tight fit but there is enough room for it all, the little black box for the patch lead just fits in at the back, tucked in behind the plastic strap, seen just to the right and below the loom.

Multi colour display gets it very close to the omega colours.

And a shot in daylight, trim isn`t perfect but near enough.

Thanks for the info guys, the pictures look really good and I think your
correct about keeping the same display colour - excellent match.

Sounds like I may be able to keep the steering buttons working by buying
some sort of adaptor as ckz, or getting a stereo with steering inputs.
Looking at Mr Gav`s pictures I assume the top half of the info display works
as normal (the computer info - consumption, etc) but the bottom half stops
working. Could I ask if this reverts to time and date as though the radio is
switches off, or does this disappear too. Also I assume the clock has to be
manually adjusted for BST / GMT etc.

I`ve also been looking for a suitable unit, and found specific Vauxhall after
market stereo`s with the correct type facia on ebay - no adaptor needed.
e.g. search for model number 6526GB.
Can any one suggest suitable models from any leading manufacturers with cd
mp3, and navigation functions that will accept the steering buttons..

Thanks for the help guys.

Dave.

I have made a few steering wheel adaptors. One for a Kenwood and one for an Alpine (all comes down to finding the voltage from the steering wheel buttons and the remote code/sequence to send to the stereo)..

You can keep the time display all the time if you cut the cable in the loom that switches it when the radio is powered.  :y

Sorry, mine has full hd screen, therefore no omega colours matching dash,
But time without cutting into loom is on,
Date only comes on when radio system is off.
Board computer works as normal.

Where is the omega matching surround from?
The cheapest I found so far was 49£ and think is too expensive just to keep the style around the radio. Lol

I bought a full din for mine a couple of months ago, it has SatNav, MP3/4, DVD, reverse camera input, steering wheel function compatible and everything else :)... only thing I found annoying with that my big stoopid monkey hands kept changing channel or functions whenever I put the gear selector into park... LOL

I had to buy a fixing cage and surround for it so it looked factory off Ebay for not alot of monies. I bought a black surround as I figured black goes with anything...

I have removed it since because I was getting a bit pissed off with changing channels etc.... I since replaced it with a Sony single din H/U which has been in several cars, it has the steering compatible and display box attached to it and also has an iPod connector too so it keeps the wife happy LOL

You will need a patch lead for the steering wheel controls which will need to match your chosen head unit manufacturer. The MID display does read time and date when switched off but I can`t remember if I had to manually adjust the time lol, The facia surround I bought was £49 and came with a cage, two surround trims and some fittings but I still ended up having to cut and carve the cage to get it right but I`m happy with how it turned out  ;)

Hi Guys,
Still looking, some of the non descript ebay units look good that are made especially for the Vauxhall
double din facia, however some of the reviews are mixed, suggesting slow response to screen presses,
or cheap feel..

Wonder whether its best to stick to a known branded unit available in this country for warranty etc..
Seems to be a mine-field though, so many to choose from....

Does any one know which wire to 'cut' to keep the date on when the radio is on??

Thanks,
Dave.

Haynes Book of Blocks will tell you :y

It gives the pin numbers and wire colours for all the connections, including the display and the radio :y

The one that joins both is the one to be looking at...

If you don't like cutting wires I believe that the MID can be configured using Tech2 so that it doesn't blank the time to display radio text when the radio is switched on.

I think that the feed that tells the MID that the radio is on also powers the aerial amplifier under the parcel shelf so be careful not to cut that one.....

Personally think you cant go wrong with Kenwood, alpine or Pioneer products, and this is through years of using there products.
There is a saying you get what you pay for?
Iv got a Kenwood screen on mine, owned it 9yrs now, 3yrs in another car and 6yrs in the miggy. Not one day since, iv had any issues with it, not a single button worned/popped out or isnt working. (I paid a fair bit, nearly a decade back. And when i bought it a decade back, i hoped it lasts a long time, and it did so no complaints here)  ;)
Also mate i wouldnt touch anything on ebay with a bargepole, audio wise (made in china and all the tech and gizmo crammed into one, might sound cool and wicked, but they rarely are) thats just my opinions though.
