Hi, can someone help?

I'm trying to change the battery on a 2.6 CDX, but whenever I connect the earth terminal, the power sounder goes off at a low volume two tone note for about 30 seconds, the stopping for about 5 seconds before starting again and continuing this cycle.

The horn itself bleeps once when the connection is first made.

The car has been sat around for a few months and I'm just trying to get it running again.

Can anyone give me a guide as to how to stop the sounder from going off, preferably without disassembling anything?

Sounds like typical symptoms of a failing power sounder.

Remove the power sounder. Do it now before it bursts into flames and destroys your car.......

(If you had described the noise as earsplitting I would have advised that you put the key in the ignition and turn it to stop the alarm going off)

Thanks for your help and advice. I left it going to see what happened and after 20 minutes it stopped for good!

Not quite.
Before disconnecting the battery turn the ignition on (no need to start engine), wait for most of the warning lights to go out, switch off and then disconnect the battery (I think you have 20 seconds to disconnect). When the new battery goes on the alarm won't sound.

I wasn't joking about the powersounder failing and setting fire to the car...... The powersounder should go off with an earsplitting sound if the battery is disconnected without first turning ignition on & off again. If yours doesn't then the built in battery is FUBAR. When the battery fails it leaks acid onto the circuit board which shorts out and catches fire.

Agree with andy remove it while it hasnt caught fire, besides its only going to take you lil bit extra. And you can sleep peacefully at night knowing, you wont find it burnt to ashes in the morning caused by the powersounder.

Now I am concerned   

My Power Sounder is fine ( I think  as its not made a single chirp since I have had my Omega - and I have had my Mini Facelift V6 from New  )

Should I remove it  or simply leave well alone

Your choice, I also have had my MFL for 15 years, but removed it and the one on the Elite, who needs them? No-one takes any notice if they go off, and the horn still operates as a warning.

Seem to remember from previous posts about this, that if you take off the power sounder, then it's advisable to inform the insurance company as it no longer complies with car details, and therefore could be fraudulent if a claim is made.
Mine went just after I bought the car, so removed it myself and had it replaced when I had it serviced. Unit cost £71.00.
Cut the old one open and what a mess. Battery acid had destroyed most of the circuit board and as this unit is connected directly across the main battery, you can see the potential fire risk.
