Removing CDR2005 VDO head unit
« on: 16 August 2014, 21:28:42 »

KR02 VDO 2.2 petrol manual saloon
Today I did a daft thing  - I put two CDs in the CD slot, jamming it
I could not get one out, so had to remove the head unit (HU). I have read several threads in the last few weeks of folks strugging with this job, so I record here how I overcame it.
I tried the 2 large Halfords wire extractors - waste of time. So I removed the switches down either side of the HU, then gently prised the HU out of the cage. The front panel popped off, but came to no harm. Eventually the HU slid out. I could then take the cover off the HU, hold down the catches on the CD unit, and extract the second CD, with help from the wife.
I replaced the cover plate, then removed the spring catch plates from the sides and bent the catches out of the way. The HU will never fall out so I deemed them redundant. I pushed the front panel back on, ensuring that the plug & socket connection was made. I replaced the side spring plates, with catches disabled, then pushed the HU back into its cage. All that remained was to put in the safety code, and the unit was working
I hope others find this useful.
