Other option, just switch your rear fogs on they throw a lot of light

I seem to remember the reversing (and rear fogs for that matter) of a Mk III Cavalier were lovely, like little headlamps in themselves.

Yes, Ive heard that too. Not contradicting myself but yes, you can remove the cat. Just didnt want to give the guy categorical (no pun intended) advice to remove it, as its something Ive never done personally. But you are totally correct, Kneepad.

Going down the chip route will be good, definitely. Have someone I know will be very interested in hearing your progress/what chip you use, etc. Much black smoke has been spoken of, after chipping; hence my concerns relating to mot.

GSX, sounds like you're pretty on the ball. You're correct about the gains with a different exhaust, and also realsitic that it wont be huge a difference.

I would suggest do the exhaust before chipping, purely as the reduced back pressure may need to be accounted for when it comes to the reprogrammed ECU.

Best of luck, look forward to hearing progress!  :y :y

Changing a rear silencer shouldn't do anything noticable to performance. Maybe tweak the engine note, but not much more. If you're talking about a complete straight through exhaust system right up to the manifold, then I've never heard anyone on here doing that to a Turbo Weasel. V6s yes, plenty of modding on them. I would be very interested to hear of anyone that has done to a TD, though.

Anyone who wants more power for their TD generally goes down the chip route.

Bonus is also you don't end up binning the cats, then find that lovely stainless steel pipework you spent all your money on has made the car fail on emissions. Which is always handy  ;)

Absolutely. But if you're anything like me, if there's two possible solutions, one costs a few quid, the other a few hundred, I tend to replace the few quidder, and cross fingers!

There must be any number of guys on here with 'good' second hand crank sensors, which are known to work, just lying around.

If all's well, and the cars running reliably, then you can go ahead and buy a brand, spanking new one, if you want, or stick with the 2nd hand one.

Either way it's not much financial investment to prove definitely it is or definitely isnt the sensor.

The V6 had EXACTLY the same problem / symptoms. The helpful chaps on here suggested it, wasnt sure it could be that simple. But crawled around under a scrapper, got a replacement, and bob's your etc, it was the crank sensor!

Never be afraid to try the simple stuff, it's often something trivial that causes the BIIG problems.

Shame more people haven't been able to give you any infor about Aircon regassing etc. However, Im just as bad, I havent anything to add to the discussion, Im afraid!

Glad it all looks like its sorted, and I know what you mean about taking your pride and joy to a garage, I try and do everything myself- at least if there's a balls-up, its MY fault, I can handle that. 70 poonds sounds very reasonable for the job, too  :y

Omega General Help / Re: Oil leak - advice
« on: 28 October 2010, 00:43:18 »
Very strange leak. Be sure it IS from there, as oil has a habit of dribbling to some odd places. Once found what I thought was an oil-filled bush leaking. Turns out it was an old, long-cured leak from the engine cam cover. Had dribbled from the block, down a pipe, to near the wishbone. Very odd!! Took a while to trace it, too.

As its betwixt engine and gearbox, it could so easily be from the cam covers or similar and simply  run down.
