General Car Chat / Good deal or not
« on: 30 June 2009, 19:55:30 »
My secretary has been running a 04 BMW mini( 50k on the clock) for a couple of years, the extended warranty ran out 2 weeks ago and guess what happened..............Power steering pump went, it's a well known fault with minis.

She was about to accept the inevitable and pay £800 for a new one from BMW but I asked did she mind if I had a go at negotiating on her behalf which she didnt.

The car went in for a diagnostic which confirmed the pump was knackered but also threw up the fact that the gearbox was on its last legs( cue her saying " I wondered what the grinding noise was " ;D) and also needed replacing at £1200 plus labour, not including a new clutch at £400 all + vat.

All in about £2400+, after several days of banter with BMW they have settled on her making a £450 contribution towards the total cost of the repairs.

I feel it's a good result as it is 5 years old and definately out of warranty, she seems happy what do you think?

General Discussion Area / Trade insurance quote
« on: 25 August 2011, 17:47:24 »
Well I finally got round to getting a traders insurance quote: I currently pay £690 for fully comp cover and the trader quotes are as follows, Fully comp £1220, 3rd party fire and theft £790 and 3rd party only £690. These are for a £5k indemnity and I can have as many cars as I like.

When I was looking for standard insurance earlier in the year 3rd party F+T was more expensive than fully comp but i'm leaning this way as the Miggy is near worthless anyway I think I will settle on 3rd party with F+T.

I was surprised at the prices being fairly reasonable and expected it to be worse, how do they stand up to others who have trade cover?

« on: 02 March 2009, 18:36:51 »
Howdy,

I'm putting a car (skoda  ;D) on fleabay for spares or repairs either as a whole or I will break it if there is enough interest but am confused by the fee system. I have seen people advertising a wheel nut etc so any advice about the cheapest way of putting it on is greatly welcome.

Feel free to start the skoda p*ss taking now !!!

« on: 06 August 2011, 15:42:31 »
I have noticed some members get info from EPC and would like to be able to do this prior to the many painful phone calls to Vaux parts dep't. Is this something joe public can legitimately download or am I straying into dangerous copyright waters ?

« on: 03 August 2011, 19:34:11 »
Went in for pads and coolant this morning. I says I need enough for 10 litres to go in the car, he says we have litre bottles of ready mix. I get home and have 10x1 litre bottles that need diluting i.e enough for 20 litres costing me £28 + vat

Not sure if it is still being worked on next weekend but something to bear in mind if heading to the little meet in Hollywell on Sat ;)

« on: 27 May 2011, 18:38:07 »
Any idea how much to get a car shifted around 25 miles? Deeside to liverpool. It's got some minor damage so can't be driven but would be ok on a dolly/a frame if anyone local fancies shifting it for beer tokens ;)

General Discussion Area / M6 yesterday
« on: 27 May 2011, 15:36:56 »
I was joining the M6 from the M58 yesterday at about 10 am when it suddenly ground to a halt, about 50 yrds ahead a girl had jumped off a bridge landing in the fast lane of ther opposite carriageway.

The emergency serivces were on site almost instantly and to be honest I was extremely impressed with their handling of what was, a horrific incident. God only knows what made her do it and it didn't look good when we got moving again but I did hear she made it to hospital but with serious injuries.

Suppose i'm just getting it off my chest as it was quite upsetting to be witness to something so sad but christ knows how the Police and ambulance staff cope with such things, they deserve every penny they earn and some :y.

General Discussion Area / Demanding classic omega recognition
« on: 03 May 2011, 20:08:54 »
After a terrible day in work and an outrageously increased quote  I came home and wrote a long ranting but reasoned demand to several classic insurance providers that they recognise the earlier Omega Elite and MV6 as classics ( in the making ) due to their increasing rarity, now don't get your pants in a twist if you own the less prestigious  ;) models as my argument is based on increasing rarity, my limited use and the models historic use .
I saw some figures last year that stated that there were just on 1000 of my model left on the road, given Elite Pete and Daz's efforts that must be at least 20% less by now  :D and the previous use of the model by the police/security forces following on from SD1's, 800 Vitesses and Senators etc it's a surefire classic!

As well as this mine is a second car that does less than 5000 miles a year, is garaged and cherished!

How swift do you think the F*** off will be ?

General Discussion Area / Free boiler!
« on: 26 April 2011, 20:57:54 »
I got a letter from the local council saying there is an energy saving scheme coming up where you can have up to £10,000 worth of work done to  your house and upgrade your boiler. I was a bit sceptical going to the open day today as I usually don't qualify for these things because I am a homeowner and have the gall to work. Surprisingly though I am geting a free "A rated "combi boiler, some extra radiators and the house covered with an insulating render layer, all gratis !

To be honest our current boiler is as efficient as the coalition and is knackered and I was struggling with how to fund a replacement so am a very happy bunny :)
