Battery question
« on: 15 November 2007, 07:45:12 »

Hi guys, although it's the last of my concerns, I think I'm needing a new battery.

Choices are:

2.5 V6 - 66 amp/hr (GM66-H3) 93176580 - £34.18

or

3.0 V6 - 74 amp/hr (GM74-H3) 93165359  £36.23

or

3.2 V6 - 85 amp/hr (GM85-T7) 93176584  £51.62

My car is a 2.5, so in theory the cheaper option will be OK. However, Please can anyone advise if there's any benefit to a bigger battery, or indeed any harm in fitting one? Reason for asking, is my charging light often comes on when heated seats, window heaters etc are all running... wondered if it needed something more beefy? I've charged my existing one once, helped for a while, then went back to the same issue

Many thanks :y

I would firstly check the connections at the alternator.

Then, follow the thickest cable (+be I think the marking is on the alternator) to the starter and make sure that this connection is clean and tight.

You should not be having the charge light coming on when presenting electrical load.

There is either a bad, dirty or a combination of the two, connection, or the alternator itself is worn (most likely to be the brushes)

To answer your question, I don't think that there is any harm in fitting a bigger battery - you will have a greater reserve of power.  In a properly maintained car (i.e. one that starts well) I am not sure if there is any benefit though....

Hope this helps.

for 2 quid I would at least get the 3.0 one.   Benefits would really only be if you only used the car irregularly, short journeys etc (although there's no getting away from the fact the battery, whatever size, still needs charging regularly).   I don't think its the cause of you charging lamp - sounds like alternator/regulator to me.  Worth checking all the connections incl earthing first off though.

If your charging light comes on it points to a problem somewhere. The battery doesn't come in to it when the engine's running. The alternator should be able to run everything with a bit of spare capacity.

Do your battery terminals get hot?

Once it's running again you need to get some measurements to figure out what's going on.

Forgot to say no problem with fitting a bigger battery if it will physically fit so the 3.0 one looks best VFM.

Are they the TC prices?

Mine is taking a bit of cranking on the very cold mornings, so think I'll chuck a new one in, and tempted for the 'beast'

If you get the biggest battery does the 'thermal jacket' still fit it? Looks to fit only one size of battery to me.  ::)
