now it works, now it doesn't!! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!
« on: 19 February 2008, 18:53:25 »

Evenin all,

This one is for the ICE doctor (Dave DND). My stereo was working on Sunday and now it's not. It lights up but there is nothing even the cd changer does not work. Is this now fubard or is there some quick fix to this? I have checked the fuse in the back of the stereo and replaced with a new one (nothing wrong with the old) or do I have to buy a replacement?

What system do you have? Checked for obvious fuses in fusebox? Everything else OK? Lighter, courtes lights, alarm etc?

The more specific details you can give, the better idea I may have.  :-/

The unit is the sc804 cdc. The fuse's are ok in the back of the unit. Not sure which fuse it is in the fuse box but checked all the fuse's. Courtsey lights work etc. The unit switches on, lights up but nothing on the TID except the date. Do you have a refurbished unit at all Dave?

Check that you have both ignition and permanent lives at the ISO block at the rear - and if so, pull the plugs on the antenna booster and see if the unit powers on then.

Sounds more like a power feed problem than a dead unit?

I have tried the ISO block for power but it seems if there is power getting to it as the lights are on the unit, maybe I am wrong and they light up anyway. As for the antenna booster can just get my hand in there but restricted so couldn't quite get to the plugs. Is there anything else I could try? Or would it be a case of an audio electritian? What about the amp would that cause a problem like this as well? It is the bose system.

I`d still want to unplug the ancilleries first before stripping the head unit down.

I will try this tomorrow as I will need to unclip the parcel shelf so I can get more of a better look. I need to get this sorted out before Friday so its quite urgent as I don't want to drive all the way to shifnal witout sounds. Even at the moment its driving me nuts just for the short distance to work and back.

Make sure you check the power at the ISO plug, don`t assume just because its lighting up that you have both feeds !

Right checked the power feeds to the plugs and they are fine. No change from the Antenna booster. Now I am stuck to know where else to check. As said earlier in this post all fuse's are ok as I have replaced all the fuse's with new ones.

Send me the stereo then I guess ?

http://ice.dndservices.co.uk/shop_show_item.php/ST/estimates/IID/740/PAGE/shop_search_index.php

Forgot to add I have tried two other known good stereo's and the same with them as well they light up but nothing. Sorry just tried an aftermarket stereo (Apine) and that works, lights up turns on BUT no sound due to having the amp bolted to the underneath of the parcel shelf and the Alpine having an amp biult in. So dave could this be my Vauxhall head unit? Would you have a SC804 CDC?

Dave Thanks for the advise you gave me on the phone this morning much appreciated. I must have a form of bug in my car and its gone. As I started my car this evening the radio started to work BUT the cd changer doesn't, I think the fuse has gone again. What must have happened, I think, is when the stereo new of a problem it shut itself down and when it new it was safe turned itself back on. :-/
Is there an explination for this or is it just a case of UH?  :-/ :-/ :-/

If the Changer blew a fuse previously and you simply replaced it without investigating the fault, then yes, the now powered up changer would overload the power supply of the radio when it tries to switch it on and this would prevent the radio from booting up - would give lights around the volume button and no display.

If you have a fuse blowing on the changer, 99% of the time its from a boot mounted changer and its probably got some water ingress in it somewhere - very common, and nothing that a scrub with a toothbrush and some spirit wont often cure.  :y

Unfortunately Dave I did not kno this as the previous owner just said his radio stopped working and replaced it with another head unit, then told the fuse in the changer needed replacement as well. Now with this info I will just keep the changer non-working until I can get to give a good clean. Thanks for your help Dave much appreciated.
