General Car Chat / Vectra petrol manual 1.8 saloon no heat
« on: 29 December 2020, 21:02:33 »
I bought this car in June 1909 from a dealer. Looked very smart, but the heater was not good on purchase, nor even after a new thermostat and radiator. I was advised to change the heater matrix, I did so, then it gave no heat at all. Both hoses to the matrix get hot, but heater gives no heat. I bought a Vectra 1.8 estate May 2020, e-bay auction purchase, car in daily use, no faults to date.
A car with no heater is no use in the winter. I have changed heater matrix, radiator and thermostat. I gather from Haynes temperature is determined by flap valves. I presume mine do not move as they should. On removing the glovebox I can see a pink lever moving on turning the large temperature control wheel.
Question is: can I rectift the fault, so that the heater prduces heat? If so, how?

General Car Chat / How do I assemble the Dremel chuck?
« on: 30 November 2020, 17:49:27 »
I forget how to insert a tool in the Dremel chuck. the nut at the end of the chuck has a square hole in the end too small to get the tool holder through. What am I doing wrong?

For decades I have enjoyed AA membership with my TSB Platinum account as long as I maintained a certain balance, Lloyds did it too. The account came with a £20 per month fee, waived if I maintained a certain balance. Now they are withdrawing the waiver. Do any other banks offer free AA membership?

General Car Chat / P0115 Engine temp circuit malfunction

2008 Astra 1.6 petrol manual saloon

Daughter has now found the diagnostic socket on her Astra, and the above fault code has been displayed.
It first appeared last Monday, with no apparent car problems. She used the car in the week, on Friday evening it started hesitantly, cranking slowly but starting eventually, she got it home and rang me. This morning she found the socket, and got the above fault. The engine did start this morning.

Before I expected either dying battery or failed alternator, not so sure now. I am in Somerset under lockdown, she is in Enfield, 120 miles away.

Please advise.

General Car Chat / Where is diagnostic socket on Astra?

Astra 2006 petrol manual 1.6
Daughter's car has a warning light on, amber, pic of engine block, doesn't start too well. I told her to plug in her diagnoser, she says where. I have looked in son's Astra, have removed gear lever surround and ash tray, still cannot see it.

I posted these items earlier, as 2.5 estate plus parts. You can buy the car, packed with all the parts you fancy, and drive it away, for the sale price and the train fare to Bath. The car is running well, MOT expires on the 21st, I have it taxed and insured, so as long as you have permission to drive any other car on your policy you can legally drive it home. I did not list all the parts in the car advert, it seems a shame to scrap them all, along with the car, and I cannot be bothered to list them and sell hem individually. You will be able to fill the estate with a wealth of parts, all ex Omega. Earler advert follows.
For sale: 2000 OMEGA CDX PETROL MANUAL 2.5 ESTATE, V828KOV,195,000 miles
complete with load cover, cargo net, towbar with electrics, and two keys..
Only faults are CD changer has ceased to function, and an exhaust blow in the region of the left hand manifold. I bought this car in 2015, 156,000 miles on the clock  from  a man who had bought it in Portugal to get his family and caravan home. On getting it home I found little rust, however I had to fit a new exhaust cat back, clutch and slave cylinder, coil pack, and cam belt kit. I changed the rear doors as the windows did not open on the original doors.

Since then the car has been the family spare, done time in Enfield and Chippenham and never let anyone down. It is still running well and in frequent use. It is taxed, insured, MOT expires on October 21st. Purchaser can drive it away, so long as he has another car policy allowing him to drive any other car. I will meet him at Bath station.

It comes with hundreds of spares, including new cam belt kit and changing tools, 4 ATE wishbones, spark plugs, 2 top hat ‘O’ rings, handbrake cable, aluminium headlamp adjuster, front door restraint kits, and many others still in Vx packets. Also included are many working items I have removed from cars I have scrapped, including 4 steel wheels with winter tyres and hub caps, several alloy wheels with good tyres, 3 working ABS units, 3 starters, 2 alternators, 2 drive shafts, 1 prop shaft, 6 door mirrors, 5 crank sensors, 3 cam sensors, a tailgate, instrument assemblies, bumpers, wiper assemblies, hoses, coolant tank, and many more.

Bodywork is tatty, pics follow.

£350, or best offer.

Omega General Help / Is there an online Vx spares catalogue?
« on: 03 October 2020, 10:43:44 »
My local Vx dealer having closed, I now need a new way of buying Vx spare parts. When I last sought a spare part, my local dealer brought to his PC screen a parts list. Is that parts list open to all, including me? i

General Car Chat / Downside Motors closed
« on: 01 October 2020, 11:20:43 »
Downside Motors, Chilcompton, Somerset, has for years been my local Vauxhall dealership. Since 1977 they have run a Vauxhall garage, selling new and used Vauxhalls, servicing them and selling spares. The service manager Peter Kuzemka has been helpful to me with advice and Tech II readings.

SWMBO and I spend our evenings watching TV while playing with our PCs. Yesterday at 2230 SWMBO sprang up and announced that Downside Motors was closing, news having come via internet from a chum in Chilcompton. This morning I drove the 3 miles there and checked, met Peter, he confirmed it, blaming the pandemic and consequent fall in custom.

Bother.

General Car Chat / Found lying behind block left hand end

2008 Vectra 1.8 petrol manual
Having lost the heater matrix hose clip I looked high and low for it and spotted this item, sitting on a ledge behind the block, near the left hand end. Looks like a temperature sensor; no message warned me of its absence. It is part of this Vectra 1.8 that has come adrift, or some other car?

General Car Chat / Removing footwell trim panel on Vectra
« on: 29 August 2020, 12:57:31 »
2008 Vectra petrol manual 1.8 saloon

Changing the heater matrix on above car, Haynes says 'remove the footwell  trim panel on the driver's side, as described in Chapter 11.
I think Haynes then describes how to do this on the passenger side. Above pic shows the driver's side. There is a footrest in the way, and a clutch pedal.  How do I remove the footrest? Any more tips?

Lexus models came out best and Land Rovers worst in a reliability survey of members in September 'Which' magazine. Least reliable individual car was the Volvo XC90.

Vauxhall came out half way in the reliability table, three ahead of Volkswagen. 'Three years of largely fault free motoring ends suddenly in a rash of engine related issues that caused Vauxhalls to break down'. They surveyed two ages groups, first three years and next five years. I always buy cars at least ten years old, and I suppose all Omegas are now at least sixteen years old.

It also found that luxury cars are the least reliable, no surprise there.

2008 1.8 Vectra saloon petrol manual
I broke the thermostat to throttle pipe on this car, could not get a new pipe due to lockdown, so stuck it in with high temp epoxy. Joint is fine, but now I find car has no cabin heat. Might the epoxy join be to blame?
Previously cabin heat was poor, now there is none. Please advise.

General Car Chat / Service due light cancellation
« on: 11 July 2020, 07:10:21 »
Astra 1.6 DS06 is due MOT in August. Last year it got an advisory note for service due light on. I recall a post on how to cancel this light, but cannot find it. Please remind me.
