Internet Providers
« on: 13 August 2018, 23:31:34 »

Many years ago I signed up with Nildram for broadband, email and some space for a website.

After a few years Nildram got taken over by Tiscali. The new owners didn't manage to break my internet and I didn't want to lose my email address or the web space so I stuck with them.

After a few years Tiscali got taken over by TalkTalk. The new owners didn't manage to break my internet and I didn't want to lose my email address or the web space so I stuck with them.

Until last month that is when TalkTalk turned off my web space. >:(

Not sure which way to jump now. There were two things that had me hanging on to a ridiculously slow connection at an inflated price - an email address and a  web space address that I have been using for 15 years. Now the web address has gone it is just the email address that I am clinging on to. I will be switching to a new provider as soon as I can.

Thinking of going with Zen this time.

I don't really want to bother with registering my own domain  :-\ but I think I will have to if I want to be able to switch provider and have some control over my email and web space.

IMHO your choices are:

1) Register a domain name, host your email and web stuff there
2) Use gmail for email and forget about hosting a web site

If going 1, don't rent your own (web) server, unless you are technically competent and want to spend your time patching, securing and maintaining it..

FWIW, Zen are probably the best ISP I've ever had.

Yep,  you won't regret going with zen.
Getting a domain name is the best way to give yourself flexibility. Might as well do it now and only suffer a change of email, erc. Once imho.

I've sort of had the same thing and decided to get a Gmail account. The problem is that Gmail tries to force you into a crap email address like joebloggs25641@gmail. I managed to get myname100@ which isn't too bad. I still have my 20 or so year old emaill address that I bought "for life" but who says the company will keep going that long or will honour it. There have been numerous takovers along the way. At least having email that is independent of ISP provides some freedom to switch in the future.

If you have a proper name, you don't need a number ::)

Get a domain name.  Will save all these issues in the future.

Very few ISPs offer web space now. Try to remain independent of the ISP...

I'm with Zen, no issues, but not the cheapest. I have "odd" requirements, including OOF, which means moving would be a lot of pain.

Oddly enough I've come home to find a letter from BT saying my prices are going up. Guess who has already cancelled BT and setup a new provider.

FTFI where all the main US tech companies have major share holdings owned by Russian front companies and they have had major hearts, minds and espionage programs aimed at key personnel. The worst two for this are the social media companies Arsebook and Shitter. The same also applies to Chinese intel penetration. As part of the US pushback, this is going to get 'interesting' for the tech companies and their culture and regulation and change things dramatically over the next few years. :o :o :o

I did have the sense to pick a decent Gmail address a long time ago and very useful it is too  :y But I do assume that Google is reading everything I send and receive  hence the desire for a separate email account.

Considering they track anyone making searches or using Google maps, even when you've told them not track you and have location services off, it's not a far jump to reading email.
