battery cable
« on: 08 November 2015, 22:15:38 »

Needing a new battery cable as relocating battery to the boot. What would be the power rating required for it. Don't know how much the starter pulls at start up. I know the alternator is 170amp.

Just so I don't run into melting stuff  :-[

Sorry, misread your post...

Try this...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-7-Series-E65-LCI-Positive-Plus-Pole-Battery-Cable-Lead-Wiring-Loom-6904876-/231720917763?hash=item35f3a49b03:g:INYAAOSweW5VQCdT :y

£30 seems a bit expensive for a few feet of cable & a couple of eyelets  :-\
A few feet... length of a 7 series should reach down the middle of an Omega, and it's designed for the job ;)

Boot mounted batteries need a high quality cable.
But that's readily available from truck factors(among others), who will sell it by the metre along with the appropriate fittings. A quick look through Car Builder Solutions catalogue has it for £6/m and fittings for £0.50 each - they're not exactly cheap, but are convenient for finding stuff. You can solder these, or crimp them if you have a suitable tool. I made mine, as the proper ones are seriously costly for something that I won't use much.

Don't forget you need the same size earth cable from the battery to the body, and at least one  from the engine to the body

You think I could run a negative length equal thickness to new positive. But bolt to the back of gearbox to battery?

Rear centre seat belt lower bolt would be my suggestion... You need a good solid connection.

Be careful with the routing of the positive cable... Straight down the middle of the car would be the best route, then up behind the cluster and through the bulkhead just outboard of the brake servo, along the chassis rail and u turn back to the starter/alternator...

Along the sill is potentially a liability ;)

If your putting a Battery in the boot, make sure you follow any safety requirements, correct battery type, sealed vented box, or battery vent pipes etc.  :y

Was thinking of the gel battery.

Was going to move the sump to chassis earth to the back of gearbox to battery. Is that ok to do?

Is the reason the battery is going in the boot, motorsport or audio related. If motor sport, don't forget kill switch.

what about the battery sized 'hole' that you'll end up with up front? It'll make changing your headlight bulbs easier  ::) ::)

IMHO it's not worth the effort involved ...... it'll get in the way more in the boot that it'll d up front  :-\

but it's your car  :y :y

I agree andy will be easier to change bulbs now. going to get a gel battery and stick it in the corner at the vents on the drivers side hopefully. got a trimming mate who will adapt the first aid box lid to suit. sorted :y

Also forgot to mention i found feeding a 0awg wire through the passenger side, behind glove box, kick plates and out near the spare tyre area. Was easier than the driver side, as that side was full of loom. But i put in another for audio needs HTH  :y

was thinking about in a black flexible conduit tubing along passenger chassis leg or is that a no-no? or up inside the tunnel clipped up so it doesn't come down?

Putting the battery there is asking for trouble... one carpark knock away from frying the car... centre of the boot is your only sensible option.

Do not run that down the side of the car... top of the transmision tunnel is your only option.

Both battery and cable need to be as far from any crash impact as possible.

Top of transmission inside or out al.

How about putting battery back drivers side at turret?

Inside... Told you the route in one of my first replies.
As for location, spare wheel well as per BMW/VXR8 would be ideal... As it needs to be between the chassis rails for crash protection. Obviously the Omega saloon spare wheel sits in the rear wing so that leaves middle of the boot, probably just behind the rear seat :y

You are overthinking this. Behind the OSR tailight is the stock battery location for 3 series BMWs and a lot of Jags.

Even the stock Omega location of behind the NSF headlight doesn't match your criteria.

Not that I would fit a battery in the boot unless there was nowhere else to put it.

Possibly...

Note the fact that the negative terminal is the one which is most vulnerable rather than the positive one... which sits over the inboard edge of the chassis rail.

Point is, cars which have batteries in the boot are designed for it ;)

Thats where my 2nd battery is located  ??? I thought that was my ideal only place, as the boot had no space.

Don't think there is a safer place than in the middle against the back seat. I know it was designed to ne under the bonnet but its been evicted from there  :y

At least if the unexpected happens, you can demonstrate that some thought has been applied, not that the insurers will rush to pay out...

Would have thought max cranking output of battery plus 10% would be prudent... don't forget you have made the starter supply about SIX times longer...

Of course, you could leave the battery in its original place and put a nice cherry red box over it ::)
