Variable Wiper Upgrade
« on: 09 November 2011, 21:16:14 »

So my Elite, which is supposed to have more kit than my CD, does not have a variable speed wiper adjuster  ::)

What exactly is involved in upgrading?

No wiring changes for me - just replaced the relay with a VW "99" relay and it works like a dream in my 2.2 CD

gotta be worth checking the pins, if the same, gotta be worth a try.

I find the 99 relay a bit more of a pain than a wheel, but better than no adjustment.
She has requested a wheeled stalk be retrofitted :( in her new one

Out of interest (no use to me, as I have the - apparently rare and sought after ;D - wheel on the stalk) - what does this magical relay do, exactly?

It is, and works well.

The bit I find annoying is when you want to move the wheel 1 click up or down as the weather has changed, and you have to start over to set it again.

No
Mine does  :P

...and it works great. Better than the Golf she had.  :y ....and my old 52 plate had it as well.

...so why on earth doesn't this 52 plate have either an intermitent wipe or rain sensor? Surely the wiring is there for rain sensor? Can epc tell what it left the factory with? Must have had one or the other? Neither is just daft...?  Screen is differant as the sun visor tinted area is lower than mine with rs. So wonder if stalk or screen was replaced with the wrong part? Guessing screen...?

It has intermittent wipe but no adjustment of the delay.

I have a 99 relay around somewhere if anyone local wants to try one. It's ultimately destined for the Westfield but there are more pressing concerns with that. ::)

As with all relays, it's the one that clicks in operation, so if you put your hand/fingers on it, you'll feel it as the wiper/indicators/etc operate  :y

Just done this .... bought the relay from the same ebay seller; the one he sent looked brand new!  30 seconds to fit and works perfectly!  What a simple and useful upgrade!  Thanks for raising awareness of this. Looks like the ebay guy has done some good business since the start of this thread too! ::)

Not a fan of the VW99 upgrade, I'd sooner retrofit the older Omega setup (my Elite is rain sensing, so not required)...

For some reason, at least in Omegas, the adjustable variable speed was dropped from the last cars, do not know the reason but 2002 models seem to lack it. 2001 it was standard. W edo not have that many with rain sensor in Finland, which I also wonder why not because it was offered as an option for some silly 50 EUR when new  :o Maybe the point in Opel was that people might more likely take the sensor-option...

Once the rain sensor became an option, the manually adjustable standard fitment was replaced with a simpler normal intermittent.

Why would you want to ... ??

The relay makes the non-variable behave like the variable .... you already have it !!!!

I have the adjustable intermittent wipe, and use it all the time, but I don't think it adjusts enough. It could do with a longer interval.
