Birmingham Leeds clean air zone charge PLUS London
« on: 07 February 2020, 12:49:08 »

The Beta reg check is on-line to check if you need to pay fees (Brum/Leeds)
I heard the Birmingham zone becomes live this summer

https://www.gov.uk/check-clean-air-zone-charge

My 53 plate 2.6 V6 is Omega is chargeable for Brum £8
the astra petrol 1.6 cars are chargeable for brum £8
the astra diesel tractors  are chargeable for brum £8
no charge for Leeds YET

obviously the above checker has been tweaked from the london ULEZ checker
(new link ,the transport for London link is changed)

https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle-35896

My 53 plate 2.6 V6 is Omega is NOT chargeable
the petrol astra 1.6 cars are not chargeable
the diesel astra tractors are chargeable £12.50

just some examples of the family fleet
obviously ,if your unlucky enough to have to visit Brum,Leeds or London then check  ;D :D

According to a friend who has to use it, the DVLA database isn't very reliable but is so badly organised searching it requires a lot of lateral thinking.

My RRS is chargeable for Brum but not Leeds.
The 4.8L V8 BMW is not chargeable for either, neither is the 2007 Cooper S (both petrol)

Same for London, but I can't imagine driving into the ULEZ..

Pah,,, this is costing haulage companies, thousands. Anything euro5 or less, no go. Got to go euro6+. New euro 6 truck £80k. We've got 63reg that will soon not be allowed into these, money making zones., It hasn't had a big impact yet on s/h values, but when it kicks off, they will plummet. Any thing with forigen plates is exempt.

I ran some more of our reg plates through the checker for Brum

one 54 plate (12 January 2005 registered) astra H 1.6 z16xep engine  is euro 4 but gets charged £8
one 57 plate ( 30 April 2007 registered)     astra H 1.6 z16xep engine is euro 4 but won't get charged

mechanically they are the same  ::)

so the checker is pants

when the LEZ started, a friend in Faversham looked at his fleet of mostly non-compliant refrigerated vehicles, did a few calculations, remembered he was over 60, and wound up the business. The trucks lost a large chunk of their value in the southeast, so he had to sell them much further north than was convenient.

The recovery company I worked for had to be careful which light vehicles we used inside the M25, and could no longer do any heavy jobs inside the LEZ.

All mine are £8 for brum, nought for leeds.  Not that it matters, seeing as I don't want to go to either (although rumour has it that central brum may be my new place of work, which will then likely be the day I leave ;)).

I feel sorry for the people who live in the zone, only exempt for two years.

I notice that a number of car dealerships premises are now empty.

To visit my wifes elderly brother we are going to have to make a 15 mile detour, probably going to take over an hour instead of 20 minutes.

We could always take the bus I suppose, and sit with the great unwashed, 3 buses probably 2.1/2 hours.

My Volvo V90 is ok for both probably due to the Adblue system - which I have just had to top up for first time.

I have a car that runs on LPG. For some reason I can go to London with no charge but it's £8 for Birmingham.... Something dodgy going on because the advice was if it is okay in London then it will be okay in Birmingham..... suddenly the goal posts have been moved!

Two wheel drive or all paw?

I had a test drive in both........ Rear drive was more fun but I felt felt safer in the 4WD version. :)

I had 740s, 940s, a 960 but . . . I always wanted one of those     ::)

Have the public this is just another funding channel, for the councils, it's another form of in-direct taxation, so the government don't have to put taxes up...

But it's green and saves the fluffy polar bears.

Yes my V90 is an Inscription D5 AWD

The adblue would not work in my paraffin heater!!

It works to be squirted into exhaust to neutralise the nasties. The same nasties for which VW and others got into trouble. Unfortunately it is only fitted to larger cars for system space reasons I think.

Fitted to anything where the manufacturer couldn't meet their target of performance vs emissions lies regulations - for example; the 190 TDI VWAG engines have it, but the 150 TDI VWAG engines in identical cars don't (e.g. Skoda Superb 150 vs 190) because they lie their way through the test meet the emissions regs without it. (This is post Diesel-gate engines, btw)

Plenty of small(er) cars have it too - Pug 208, for example.

Well almost right, its squirted into the exhaust and reacts in a catalyst to reduce NOx (and on the latest, to pretty much zero). There is another way to reduce NOx with a catalyst alone, this only works on small engines fitted to light vehicles, all others need AdBlue (akthough the very latest NOx specs may require all to need it).

What VW did is disable the EGR which, is the primary method for NOx reduction. This helped throttle response and fuel consumption plus, it meant they could avoid fitting the exhaust treatment systems. In simple turns, if the vehicle detected no steering input for circa 1 minute, it changed to a map with massive EGR to trick the test (it would be almost un-driveable in this mode with lots of lag and hesitation).
