My plasma television has gone tit's up.
« on: 21 February 2018, 18:42:15 »

About 6 years old.

I noticed that on the back it had a small plaque that read 'power consumption 275W'.

Sounds a lot. :-\ :-\

That's why they get so hot, they need a smallish nuclear power station to keep them running.

Plasma screens are a lot less reliable than LCDs, or so my youngest tells me. :-\

By their nature, the picture quality degrades significantly as its used, much like old CRTs.

When I did my C&G for TV repair, a CRT tube and Plasma unit had a usable life of 3-5yrs, depending how it was used. Nothing has changed, as all R&D has gone into LCD...

I wouldn't buy another.

It didn't handle straight lines well making them pulse, fizz, and shimmy.......and as mentioned 275 W of power for several hour every day adds up.

Hmmm....not so sure. It cost £530. Forty two inch Panasonic.

I've dragged a forty inch Sony Bravia from the bedroom for now. I would say the picture quality is superior. :y

As far as picture quality goes, it's hard to replace a (decent) plasma for the price - unless you want to splash out on a nice OLED set. LED pales in comparison and LCD is for people on benefits who can't afford anything better to eat their KFC in front of..  :P

I ogle the OLEDs every time I go into Costco, but I can't justify that kind of outlay on a TV.. it'd be a bit big for my livingroom, anyway, unless I suddenly become extremely myopic ;D

My Plasma was brilliant while it lasted...Panasonic. However, it developed a thin yellow line down the screen, which I understand is common. It faded after a while, but gradually got on your tits. Dumped it (weighed a ton) and got one of these modern LDC ones. Lighter, and a super picture :y

Well. I know it's not plasma, but don't know if it's LCD, LED, or even if I'm becoming OCD thinking about it all. Bought in 2008 so it will probably be 'donald ducked' by the weekend.

Anyway I prefer the old 16 inch black and white TV of my youth. No remote and just three channels. Once the valves had warmed up I would sit back and enjoy the Top Gear of it's day.......a nice little show called Wheelbase. :y

Iv got a 50" Panasonic plasma, had it for about 7 years and it still a very clear bright and sharp picture, this replaced another 1st generation Pioneer 50" plasma thats still going strong and must be around 18 years old by now... I swapped the Toshiba 36" flatscreen (weighed around 95KG !!!!) that I had bought as a refurbed unit from a place I used to work as a TV installer/engineer and the fella I got the Pioneer from said it cost just shy of £3K when it was new...

It had a seperate screen and media box and didnt even have freeview built into it... and no HDMI input but I had it running in HD with hoe I connected it up...

Yes if you watch catch up TV on a computer, tablet or even a mobile phone, whether it's the BBC's iplayer or one of the commercial stations catch up services, you need a licence.  ;)

In Rods case given he dosn't have a TV in his house but may have several devices lying around that are capable of the above, I don't know how they would test, prove and enforce the law.  :-\

Maybe send a SWAT team in?  ???  ::)  ;D

GCHQ have "Listening Posts" dotted around the UK with highly specialised equipment capable of detecting what device you are viewing TV programmes on and which channel; I helped design some of said equipment in a previous life, so I know how well it works - so BEWARE, Rods 2..... :P

I think you only need a license if the equipment is able to show 'live' tv. Watching recorded programmes you dont. IIRC

Any piece of equipment that can download BBC iplayer enables you to watch live tv. Simply stating that you don't watch it, even though you could, shouldn't be a good enough reason to get away with paying the license fee.
Not that I'm saying the fee is justified.

Well, I'm correctly equipped for committing all sorts of crimes but I can't hear the feds knocking my door in. ;D

The fact that the BBC don't secure any of their services adequately against unlicensed users is their problem. It doesn't justify them sending threatening letter to innocent people.

Besides, iPlayer is really secure. It asks you if you have a licence before activating.  ::)

The only reason I buy a TV licence is to save the nagging I would get from swmbo if I didn't.
It really pains me to be forced to fund a Corporation I detest with a passion.
I don't believe the current setup can continue for that much longer with the fast changing world we live in though.

You don't have to own or use them, just use your crime definition as you might be tempted to and therefore should have insurance. :P :P :P

I might be off track here, Rods2, but nowadays, because telly can be watched through a computer, do they count that as a receiver !! :)

I hope your motorhome, caravan and motorcycle insurances are all valid and up-to-date? ???
Now we have to work out who owns any of those three things, so we know who the licence dodger is referring to.  ;D

You don't have to own or use them, just use your crime definition as you might be tempted to and therefore should have insurance. :P :P :P
I'd have to have access to them first, which I haven't  :P
Did you watch Corrie last night? Awful goings on.  ;D

Is there a point to watching 'corrie'? :)

The episode will consist of either 'an argument in the local drinking pit'.......or a schoolgirl preggo. ::)

Ok...listen carefully and I'll try to explain. Rods doesn't have a TV licence, that's what the thread is about, you see. So when I said 'Did you watch Corrie?', I was goading him, as I do. Get it? Good.

I know......but the tentative link to 'watching corrie' was enough for me to alter the direction of the discussion.. Something that happens on a regular basis here at OOF. A post may start out discussing the price of fish and end up with a list of girls with a fishy fanny.

The next post could well be from that Sir Tigger fella on he subject of 'lady gardens' :)

Sorry I'm a bit late to this, but unlike all you old codgers I've better things to do today than discuss the price of fish.  :P  ::)

I will offer my opinions on Lady Gardens though.  ::)  The bare look feels a bit pervy and the full bush can make things difficult, I prefer a little 'landing strip' or 'garden path' to show me the way to the little man in his canoe!  :y

No rug munching for me either Ron, just a little strip for aesthetic purposes!  :y  I believe it's commonly known as a Brazilian. :)

Pubes in the teeth are easily dispatched with a deft lick of the inner thigh...

Which also has its own merits ;)

Well there were plenty of threads highlighting just how crap Plasma Tvs were  ;D ;D ;D

When selecting where to buy a replacement its worth considering that John Lewis price match and include a 5 year warranty and Richer Sounds also price match and include a 6 year warranty.
