Top hose water leak !!
« on: 25 January 2008, 17:51:15 »

Engine has been losing small amounts of coolant for months, Timbuk and Elite Pete suggested check cooling fan thermo-switch / top hose as a possiblilty, all over things have been changed. On close inspection water just below top hose, put on new hose clamp, no change, replaced thermo-switch (thanks Issunax), today drained coolant & flushed system many times with clean water, filled with 50/50 antifreeze. Guess what, faint water leak from just under the bottom edge of the top hose, does the plastic flange split ? , will try another new hose clip tomorrow :(
An other idea's please

More than likely the plastic flange has an hair line crack in it, so it could need another radiator or a good repair if its poss :(

Thanks for the offer Chris, I may need it. Drained coolant again today so as to undo the top hose, bad news the plastic spout is broken on the underneath and so has caused it to collapse. The spout is only solid for about 15mm, wrapped ptfe tape around a few times then covered it with water gasket sealer, pushed the top hose on as far as it would go, then tightened the jubilee clip. After 20 miles drive it looks dryish, any other ideas of a repair or is it a replacement.  :(

Hi
If it is a plastic pipe on the radiator, then I remember reading somewhere that you should not use jubilee type clips, I think they should be the horrible spring type ones you need to take off and put on with pliers. It was something to do with expansion and contraction.

This of course is if I remember it correctly.

I think you maybe correct ! The plastic pipe is cracked and broken, it did have a spring clip on it but as it is so short now I have had to use a jubilee clip.

:( dazzler you were spot on, however it is now a major crack, with all the messing about with the top hose over the passed 3 days the crack is now very evident, thanks for the offers but 'Issunaz' to the rescue again with a replacement rad. This slow leak problem has been going on for months, maybe this time it will be sorted.
