Bmw x3. Could somebody advise please. Bmw state you have to use there transfer case oil. Would it actual make any difference if good quality diff oil was used instead.

I would imagine that diff oil and transfer box oil are different things...

BMW will quote the oil spec for it, likely a BMW spec. Make sure the oil you purchase meets that spec.

Asking because I bought diff oil and transfer oil from Bmws and my local garage has put the diff oil in the transfer box. When I question this his boss said both the same.

Personally I smell BS.  A transfer box is not a diff (in the way a centre diff on many AWD cars are), its a, errr, transfer box.

Transfer boxes are normally very, very expensive to repair, and I guarantee not worthwhile on an X3....

That said, no idea if the X3 is a real 4wd, or a shitty awd.  Beyond that its offroad capabilities are non existent.

Not as costly as a new transfer box.

a quick google suggests the transfer case oil is not the same as diff oil and is a dealer part only and the vehicle involved needs to be plugged into a bmw tech thingy to register that it's been changed.

My last should of read i got the fluids from bmw. Anyway I have now spoken to bmw and to play it safe iam now booked in tomorrow and they are going to replace both transfer fluid and diff fluid.
I will give the bill to the other garage and expect a fight to get reimbursed.

To TB it is a all wheel drive 60 40 split until it needs power then splits where it needs it. It handles well enough on wet grass, just waiting to get some more snow. It will do for now and yes the build quality is bad but its easy to put back all the piece that fall off.
The only stupid one was the rear washer is ran thru the car with a join half way thru. Only found this out when i lost 5ltrs of screen wash under the carpet.

As opposed to 4wd?  ie, does it have a transfer box, or a centre diff?
