Title: Junk and Disorderly
Post by: STEMO on 02 December 2019, 21:02:10
Just spent a pleasant hour watching this on ITV4. Surprised I haven't come across it before. Lovely Daimler 250 V6.

I've found it an interesting series[last episode next week I believe]must admit I don't see the fascination[or costs]with old oil cans, but it's each to their own.Shows there is reasonable money to be made the trick being knowing what to buy, where from and for how much, otherwise you'd finish up with a stall full of overpriced tat that no-one wants to buy.Same as Wheeler Dealers though when calculating their running profits at the end of each programme are they taking into account their time spent and travel costs etc?

Indeed.

I always preferred the 250 to the MK2, I thought the bumpers were much more delicate, but wire wheels are a must, the later steel wheels with hub caps are nowhere near as nice IMO.  8)

I also find it funny how two such similar cars can be so far apart in price.  :-\

Is this the lump from the Majestic?

Daimler Majestic Major certainly had V8 in it,my paternal grandfather had one and a SP250[Dart] up until 1966 when he traded both in against a brand new Humber Imperial[posher version of Super Snipe] for some odd reason most of the Daimler versions of the equivalent Jaguar have been cheaper as a used car although I'd think the Daimler possibly more expensive when new.

And all were dynamically balanced in manufacturing which is probably why the bottom end was bulletproof

The 250 V8 and the 4.5 engines[I think] were designed by Edward Turner who also designed the Triumph 500cc parallel twin motorcycle engine.

Saw a old S reg 2.3L Mk2 Granny in Waitrose car park in Ely this afternoon. Was diamond white but apart from a little surface rust along the bottom of the doors it looked quite clean.

There is a 1961 Daimler Majestic for sale in this weeks CCW which states it to be a 3.8 suggesting to me that it's probably a straight six,so you'd need the majestic Major for the 4.5 V8.

They always do because cars of today are proper 'fat bastards'

I saw an old Austin 1300 a few months ago and it looked as though it had shrunk in the wash. Tiny. :)

The Zephyr/Zodiac Mk3 was the model that was most common in my youth.

I thought they were huge way back then but as you say.......... :)

my sister sold hers(a red and white two door) a couple of years ago, and said the easiest way to find it in a carpark was to spot the people looking into an empty space in the row.

Weight of modern cars is another issue; the original Elise, with its plastic body, all aluminium drivetrain and chassis and no interior is acclaimed as a featherweight at 'only 725kg', yet an Avenger is only 100kg heavier. And that's a comfortable 4 seat saloon made of steel using a castiron engine and live axle.

Agreed. There are very few even small cars under 1000KG these days.

Speaking of the Austin/Morris 1300.......I always loved the 1300GT as a kid, with it's BVR,  fancy wheels and bright colours. :y

Anything with 100bhp used to be plenty quick enough to have serious fun in, when the average car weighed well under a ton.
Much more fun than what we have for quick cars these days.

Yep. It would be for sale for £30,000 instead of the £2300 I sold it for in 1983.
