In my limited experience of (poorly) spraying with a 25l compressor, it will need a regulator, which means limiting max air flow to get consistancy.

The small 25l was ok for my purposes, but I can see that proper spraying of a car panel would probably need more capacity, as the motor was running almost constantly, clicking off only briefly before firing up again. It did get hot.

But you really need input from someone with proper spraying experience.

real life painters never use 25 or 50 litre compressors.. minimum I have seen is 250 litre and dual heads ;D
(and they use it only for base coat or patches) .. final painting done in  cabins where there are huge volume compressors..

and with 50 litre I have used 1.3 and 1.7 tip hvlp guns..  with this size you cant even complete a single coat on a panel without stopping (pressure drop)..

with 0.8 if you accept tiny coats its ok ;)

ps: limiting air pressure requires a small manometer , but if you dont have an experienced painter can easily arrange pressure from the gun

the guns wont spray a correct shape and distribution at incorrect pressures

no offense meant but a second hand compressor if it will be used for painting , dust and oil inside the tank will be very hard to clean..   :-\

I have one very like this (it is made by ABAC), if you could get this for the right price it would be a good buy (although obviously more suited to someone closer to it!)......and only a new start cap required (I agree with the diagnosis)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ABAC-3hp-100-Litre-Air-Compressor-240V-for-spares-repairs-with-accessories-/121494073030?pt=UK_Air_Tools_and_Compressors&hash=item1c499c6ec6

Thanks for the link, Mark (and Andyc ). I had seen that and am contemplating. :y
Cem...I appreciate where you are coming from with nozzle sizes etc. As I said, when I did this during my working life, I had compressors with enough power to launch a space ship ;D
Chris, I was not being sarky with my 20 year statement...all input is appreciated.

I am writing to the council to see if it is possible to get yellow lines outside my house to avoid a line of parked cars awaiting panel resprays :y

They are real easy to clean out Cem and anyway, you use an external filter dryer for spraying  :y

yep.. I'm using all sorts of filters..   but even this cant stop all sizes of dust :-\

and in my last cleaning I use a serious amount of thinner/reducer to wash the compressor  ;D  no oil was left but for dust I'm not sure

You will always get oil and for the compressor its a good thing.  :y

Dust is pretty easy to remove from the air output though.
