For the last year or two, occasionally when starting the 3.2, particularly if it has been used within the last hour or so, on the first turn of the key, nothing happens, no lights dim etc. On the second attempt, it starts fine. I have replaced the ign switch, no difference. Any thoughts? :-\

I noticed you have to turn to 2 then wait a second or 2 before cranking

No. (Whats an RFID device? :-[ Radio frequency...?)
It happens - I think - with either key, but will try to identify if one or t'other. The trouble is, it happens randomly, not every time. :-\

yes , like a house alarm fob , access dongle ,smart key from another car etc

I think it'll turn over regardless of the state of the immobiliser.
Bar the starter solenoid itself, the other thing in the circuit is the interlock built into the gearbox selector switch. It's worth cleaning that out every so often anyway, so worth checking it.
Could just be the starter solenoid sticking slightly when hot. I think mine went through a phase of doing it once, then stopped after a while so I never investigated further.

Check it's fully in Park, it won't start if in R. I've had the same sometimes, nothing on first click, but tap the gearshift to ensure it's in park and it starts.

Is the ignition switch still secure following the barrel work?
Also what happens if you do the following...
Key in position 0: 1,000, 1: 1,000, 2: 1,000, crank... :-\
Sometimes it takes the electrickery time to catch up with the mechanicals.
If I jumped into mine and threw the and key straight to crank, quite often nothing happened... A little patience can go along way ;)

You need to adjust your switch/shift linkage before it leaves you stranded with the key locked in the barrel ::)

I had the same symptoms with my 3.2 - sometimes it would start on first turn of the key, the next it would appear to be dead, although the ignition lights etc were on. If I repeatedly operated the key, it would eventually spring into life and turn over as normal and then start. I didn't think it was the starter at the time as there was no 'click', and thought it was the ignition barrell switch contacts. I got one made to the same key number, but then instincts took me back to the starter motor.
When I removed the starter, and checked it - the solenoid was knackered (badly corroded inside). Hence the intermittent starting issue which appeared to vary according to temperature, until it wouldn't start at all. A new solenoid, and it now starts perfectly every time.

My astra occasionally does this, only on the first start (or non-start) of the day. About once a month or so.
