ive no error msgs at present, just that the route cannot be calculated.
Do i need the whole aerial or can i just track down a connector?

back to german ebay, thats where the CID came from!

Can you reprogram in your current location at all?

Can you access the test mode, or screen to show signal strength / sattellites received?

Others may be better at guiding you from here (excuse the pun)

Dave, can't program my location at all and the only data i can get from the CID is the longtitude/latitude location, and the nearest town/area....which is currently newton stewart!

Would this need to be TechII'd to get the error code you think?

tech2 is never a bad idea for checking out errors, however, a new GPS antenna is usually cheaper than a tech2 session.

I know which I`d try first, as the antenna can always be sold on afterwards if it proves to be something else.

Right, firstly, in the top right hand corner of the CID screen is the GPS logo red, yellow or green?

GPS antenna is on the roof (base part of the cellphone antenna) blue connector accesable under high level brake light roof panel but it's unlikely to be there, another connector in drivers kick panel, again unlikely to be a problem there. Most likely connection fault will be the right angled plug on the head unit cage.

the GPS logo is red....so im guessing thats bad!

unfortunately the car is the bodyshop at the mo, but when its ready ill have to take a close look at the back of the HU (saturday evening). I had the HU out to change the trims so i guess your right VXL!
Ill have a look at all the connections, starting with the aerial, just to be sure. When i know more, ill update this thread.

If the HU one is found to be faulty, is the only option to replace it?

It may have just pushed the right angled connector off the back of the cage (head unit plug itself is pretty solid).

If you remove the head unit (watch the bezel!!!) there is a single screw holding the cage in place, the cage can then be slid out by pressing the top and bottom of the cage together and sliding.

ok, had a nosey tonight there and it would appear that the GPS lead has become loose in the back of the cage.

tried to get the cage out but didnt have the time to do it properly. however, it does seem VERY secure....other than the screw in the back and the clips around the edges are there any other hidden screws/clips???

As VXL said - GPS wording in top right:

Red - no sat fix
Amber - 2d fix only
Green - Sat fix

With these units, its common for the cage to slightly distort, causing a poor connection on the sat connector.

Cage is simply held in place by the 2 tabs either side, some have a small bolt at the back right in the centre.

small update.....

got the cage out and removed the connections from it. plugged them all into the back of the HU and now the satnav has positioned the car in my backyard. It even calculated a route on the map display, still only an arrow on the other display. When i drive the car the arrow moves in a random direction, not following the road. GPS is still in red!

new aerial lead needed?

Is it seeing any satellites?

For info, I am yet to find anyone who can provide the plug that clips into cage (and believe me, I've tried).

There is a seller on egay who sells suitable satnav antennas for these (as well as the carin type), around £5 + £2 p&p.  These would mean modifying the cage so only the very front of the cage is used (simply to hold stereo in place), and then plugging the leads directly in back. Not ideal.

I can only assume that it still isn't tracking any satellites as the GPS in the corner is still red!

Do you have a link for the ebay aerial? I think its worth a try to at least work out what's wrong!

Press and hold MAIN for about 8s, then press NAV, should get a shit load of diag info.  From memory, first number is number of tracked satellites.
