Anything particular to watch out for beyond body rust and making sure all the toys work :-\

Engine wise nothing, oil is important on the V8 the recommended one in the handbook & sales brochure I have with mine is Mobil 1 fully synthetic, according to all the MB magazines & club info I have the engine (M113) is one of the best. Also recommend the auto box has an oil & filter change at around 80,000 miles, the gear change should be virtually unnoticeable.

Sheepskin coat should be included at point of sale. CL is much classier and better looking!

Am looking towards the bottom of the pile for a functioning car rather than a museum piece ;)

Regarding rust, from memory I thought mercs of this era could suffer structural rust while leaving the body relatively unscathed. Although this could be hearsay- I've not researched it personally.

If true, I wouldn't buy one without having it on a ramp first.  :y

All the grotty ones I have seen in passing have been visibly horrific. Car in mind looks reasonably clean if a little worn :-\

Agree with Tilbs in as much as the engine and gearbox are likely to be the least of your worries if not abused.

Vacuum powered central locking will fail. Self lubricating plastic impellor wears overloading motor
Dashboard backlighting is high voltage CFL rather than LED and will fail at some point. Quite expensive to fix.
It will rust violently at some point if not treated to anti rust measures earlier in life
Mine has a quiessent drain the on the battery through the same circuit as the radio (suspect something to do with convenience pack but not had time to investigate yet)
Airmatic suspension bags/pumps/level sensor actuators are all fairly common fails...
Steering wheel buttons are poor...

Search W220 encyclopedia for more ...

Still one of my favourite cars and will only get replaced when the W221 becomes cheap  :)
