Give them your engine number on log book and you be sure to get the right belt, but if your going to do the job buy the full cam belt kit.

Thanks for the advice everyone, Got a new gates belt today.
Paid 27quid +vat. does that sound expensive for belt only?

Apparently they are all the same belt for the v6 regardless of year or capacity, according to the info on the box.

I didnt need the full kit as the belt was a replacement for a nearly new one I managed to destroy in a recent teeth/sprocket jumping drama ::)

Make sure you use a proper locking kit though as without it's only best guess!

All belts are the same across v6. Only changes in kit are backing plates, and lower idler on later cars.

As AndyB says, and this cannot be stressed strongly enough, you must use the proper timing kit. Whatever people might think, probably having done a few belts on other cars before, it simply is not possible to do the GM v6 without. At best, you'll get a reasonable approximation. More likely, it will be far enough out to affect performance. Its highly possible it will be too far out, resulting in new valves being ordered....
