...and Mrs TB is nagging me for pressie ideas.

I have absolutely no idea beyond what I've already told her - a piece of polystyrene and a small box of electronics with wires hanging out.

Having just seen the news about the latest Grenfell outrage...

...the incident was in extremely poor taste, but arresting 5 people is a bit extreme, isn't it?

As some may have noticed, we've been up and down like a whore's drawers since about 8pm yesterday.

This is due to a problem at Zen Internet, which they believed they had resolved in the early hours, but reoccurred again.

Since the 1st fix in the early hours, we've had a reasonably stable connection, but our monitoring clear shows its not 100%.  Zen are on the case with the utmost urgency, due to the widespread nature of the issue.

Fingers crossed we won't be impacted too much until its properly resolved.

General Discussion Area / Outage this evening (Monday)
« on: 29 October 2018, 08:22:33 »
We need to apply some urgent security patches to both the front end web server and backend database server, which also involves a reboot of those servers.

Outage will be approx. 45 mins, and during this time, you will experience timeouts and database error messages.

This work is expected to take place between 6pm and 7pm today (Monday)

General Discussion Area / OOF outage over weekend
« on: 15 September 2018, 21:22:04 »
I need about 2hrs to fix OOF (well, likely to be a reinstall of the forum software and the retweaks, as that'll probably be easier). Not entirely sure when, as need to fit in, so will likely be short notice.

You will be presented with mostly timeouts, but occasional Maintenance Mode pages.  Please, if you see this, don't try again for a couple of hours, as all it does is load up the webserver excessively when people sit on the refresh button.

I thought I had mentioned this before, but can't see it.

I'd like to point out that they are, indeed, a complete shower of shits.  Best avoided IMHO.

My fault for a) using egay, b) not noticing the company name which I know a few members have had delivery issues with.

Fortunately, only £25, so a reasonably lucky escape, as could have been a significant amount.

Call them, and they speak good enough English right up to the point they have taken the details, then kein englisch sprechen

Egay case raised, but they are using the age old trick of repeatedly leaving it the maximum length of time before responding, and then responding with nothing of substance.

The best they can come up with is if/when it arrives, refuse it, and courier will return it, then I'll get a refund.  But they can't tell me which courier, so it will likely be left in safe place or with a neighbour, then its my expense to send it back...  ...assuming it ever does arrive. If it never arrives, it seems they refuse to refund.

Knob Jockeys.

General Discussion Area / Outage Wednesday morning
« on: 24 July 2018, 19:31:02 »
Following today's SNAFU where a storage system had a spaz, we'll need to go offline for about a hour tomorrow morning in order to resync the primary and standby databases. As this process needs to lock all the database tables, this means you will see the page forever trying to load, or get a message that SMF Database is too busy.

General Discussion Area / The British Public

I see there are no end of protests in Jockular land about Trump paying a private visit to one of his businesses for a quick break.

I also see that the Sir David Attenborough is hopefully being launched today, a boat made famous by the Boaty McBoatface voting saga.

I think we have to accept that the British public are incredibly thick and stupid, and getting orders of magnitude worse with each generation.
