Corsa questions.
« on: 31 July 2019, 20:06:12 »

56 plate 1.2 sxi corsa. How much would ved cost ? Whats a realistic mpg figure overall ? Advert says "chain rattles on startup for 1-2 seconds". Likely to be terminal / a major problem, or something that can be lived with ?

The answer to your first two will be on auto trader/ honest john. As for the chain, wifey's three year old astra takes a couple of seconds for the hydraulic tensioner to fill and sounds nasty. Engine characteristic according to Vx.
If you've got the reg, road tax is here:

lots of common problems
chain rattle on start up is very common on corsa and astra 1.2 & 1.4 z12xep z14xep
they also suffer low oil pressure when warm, water leaking into the footwells from the scuttle ,handbrake cables seize and snap if not greased (but are cheap to replace)
they are OK for learners but astra 1.6 is a better option for a run-around if you have decent No claims bonus etc

I want something with high mpg and low or zero ved, for three fifths of far call, obviously.  :)
Corsa is £145 pa for ved, which as too high, although the car itself is cheap, so I shall have a think.

1.2 has absolutely no poke, Albs. You'll be up and down the box just to keep it at a reasonable lick.

If the car is what you're after, I wouldn't let £13 a month put you off.

Im trying to justify to myself replacing the chip fat wagon (whether or not I get it fixed) with a small more modern hatchback, so trying to make the sums as close as I can get them. VED for the 190 is around £250 p.a. but fuel is approx. £10 per month on average.
A little hatch which does around 50mpg will cost around £50 per month on fuel, but if the VED was zero or close to it, it closes the gap up to a degree.
Not looking for something exciting to drive, just as cheap to run as possible, and not needing the constant maintenance that the 30 year old 190 needs. Im getting to old for it tbh.
Its only for getting to work and back after all.

you won't get 50 MPG out of a corsa ,even if you drive like a girl
you can get about 40mpg out of an astra H 1.6 and tax is 195
astra H 1.7 CDTI is very good on fuel (we have 2 such tractors) some are low tax too ,not sure how that works  :-\

how much is your 190 to fix ?

Not even sure what the problem is yet. Too much time at work to spend much time on diagnosing. I have a bit of a suspicion that its the fuel pump. If it is, they are rare and expensive and need special tools to install and set up. The other thing is that it always needs something doing, which I used to love doing, but Im starting to feel too old for it and worn out for it now*. Have a list of jobs to do to both cars, and never seem to be able to make headway with them like I used to.

*Im not quite 60, but its been a fickin hard life.  ::) ;D

a 2006 could be a corsa c or d , it's the change-over year

having had a couple of corsa c on the fleet a couple of years ,we got rid recently , which I'm happy about  ::)
I think astra H is a much better/robust car at that price-point

I was also very happy to dump the french turd Citreon from the fleet last year  ;D :D

One of the main probs with these little carsa's is the timing chain rattle, and thats what they get rid of them owing to it being a day job in a garage to have it sorted.
Well its a fairly easy and rewarding job to do on your drive, ive done three of them now and once you have finished the job and turn the key it sounds a different car to the one you had rattling away earlier.... the chain kit will cost you around £80 for a good one.

Mrs E has a little cli o, and as a shopping trolley/short distance commutor I can't fault it... economical, resonable nippy/agile and very reliable .. I couldn't sit in it for more than an hour as it would kill my back .. but for shorter trips .. no problems at all.

Ive got 2 Corsa 1.2's, ones a a Van and the other a 3 Door Car, both are Dual Fuel LPG and save me an absolute fortune in Fuel Money.

I would highly recommend them for little cheap run arounds , ok there not the fastest things on the planet but do a good job of MPG, wack them in 5th at 25mph upwards and they will save you fuel.

Plodding in and out of London I get around 37mpg on LPG, thats about the same as around 44 MPG on Petrol litre for litre, but cost wise at 55p a litre for LPG works out the same as buying Petrol or Diesel and getting around 90 mpg (6.5p a Mile). On a Motorway or good run I can squeeze about another 30% out on MPG.

the 1.2 is the one to go for, forget the 1L which is a 3 Pot theres just not enough torque and your end up potentially doing more fuel.

Chain rattle on Start up is fairly normal for a 60K Plus Corsa and nothing to worry about, as for the rest there a cheap fix to keep on the Road.

Not planning on doing so Henry. The vegoil experiment last nearly 10 years and saved me lot of money when I really needed to do so.
Money isnt quite as big a problem , now but lack of energy to do the collecting, filtering and look after a 30 year old car is though.  ;)

Im trying to justify to myself replacing the chip fat wagon (whether or not I get it fixed) with a small more modern hatchback.......

Not looking for something exciting to drive, just as cheap to run as possible....

Its only for getting to work and back after all.

Sounds like Albs is the perfect candidate for an EV:y

If I could find a cheap one it would be perfect. Got a charging point thing at work I can use.

......and just think of all the sexy girls it would attract.

Yep and with 2 days to go it's only £834!  :y

What's not to like!  ???  :)

It has a/c heated / cooled seats, DAB radio etc. You can only use these on your drive while its still plugged into the mains, as the battery range has dropped to seven miles and it needs new ones.  ;D

Pah a minor detail!  ::)

An EV of that vintage would use lead acid batteries, so chuck a couple of Varta's in it and you're on your way!  :y
