Hi Guys, im posting this not to be a smart ass but more to highlight and solve an issue I have had with my car for the last few months.
Today I actually (think) I sorted the problem out (Please God!!)

The reason for this post is in the subject

Where I am heading is: I consider myself a reasonable sort of "mechanic" I can fix most things!

 However my Opel (Omega, that I should have sold at least 6 years ago) has slowley lost power and fuel consuption rising. for absolutly no reason and because i drive it regually I never really realised the issues until i fuel it.

I have regually hooked it up to my Isuzu Tech2.. and nothing has come out of it..Everything works as it should

I have replaced in the last 5000KM all plugs, gaskets, leads,, DIS, all filters, air leaks  etc etc. everthing has been done and yet its still been loosing power!??

OK, heres the challenge! all jokes aside what would you think the issue is?

Again, i only figured out this today, something so simple the solution may or will helpother members!

To help i gave 5the old girl a groom and washed down the engine bay (no its not water in the spark plugs)

No other symptons? Just down on power and up on fuel consumption, eh?  Does it start well and run cleanly? Are there no warning lights on? Do all the bulbs come on when ignition is switched on? Is there any smell of petrol?

Is it auto or manual?

I am perplexed. If it were binding brakes they would smoke. Is the exhaust blocked?

Fuel filter blocked ?

Are there any stored codes?

I know you have said air leaks all checked. I had one that was actually in one of the 90 degree elbows on the approx 1.8th black vacuum lines.

I didn't know I was down on power until I notice that the same elbow had split and when checking the rest of the vac pipes, found the the bagpipe Vacuum reservoir one way valve
had packed up and wasn't storing vacuum. Fitted a replacement, repaired the elbow. Now I know I was down on power. What a difference, more power and smoother with it.
There are a lot of little gadgets and sensors on the Omega, and it certainly pays to make sure they are all working.

Actually, rereading the OP, someone left a sponge in the air intake when they shut the bonnet... ::)

Was it strugging to trim. Were the trim values for both banks 128?

As you say, that's so obscure that who would ever think about it?? Sounds not dissimilar to my old girl who, after much help from the terrific peoples of this forum (as well as the smart alecs  :y ) found the throttle body screw was maladjusted - how?!!? How on earth did that get moved?? As you say, it highlights that sometimes it can be something so utterly bizarre and left-field, that no-one would ever guess.

Tonight I'm going to check all my plugs are in tight, now  :y

There was swearing! 
Couldnt belive it and there was absolutly no symptoms, no noises nothing. It must have been just loose enough to affect compresion but not enough to actually show anything really out of order.
The good thing is that I can now do a complete spark plug change in these things in about five minutes, when i first pulled them out it took over an hour!

Ahh worry not, I've been working on Omegas since I was a wee nipper, and at the weekend it took me two hours to remove two caliper bolts and completely ruin the allen screw for the brake disc. Not a good day, and sometimes things just won't come undone/go the way they're supposed to  :'(

I'm just thinking of the Michael Caine scene in Batman - the "Why do we fall, Master Bruce?..."
