General Discussion Area / M1 and railway closure near London
« on: 15 April 2011, 18:36:13 »
Anyone affected by the M1 closure near London or by the railway lines nearby? Delays look horrendous. I suppose everyone has sat nav which no doubt sends you a different way.!!  :y

Nato is pressing for more planes for bombing raids.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-13074189

Won't be long before we send more to fill the void left by our Nato "partners". Not much of a united NATO approach is it!

I see Hague now thinks we ought to be funding the rebels. My god have we lost the plot completely. How would we have felt if the Libyans had funded the IRA or ETA ? I have lost what respect I had for Hague.

General Discussion Area / Just had tractor driving fun
« on: 13 April 2011, 20:12:10 »
Yesterday a Spanish neighbour who helps us out a lot, asked can you help me tomorrow. Yes says I see you at 8.00 a.m.

When I got there equipped and kitted out for most eventualities it turned out to be a nice job driving his New Holland tractor towing his 2000 litre capacity spraying rig around his newly aquired groves while he followed on foot spraying the dense foot high weeds via 50 metres of tube and a pistol.

Quite exciting in a few places as olive groves tend to be on steep stony slopes that you can't grow wheat on. The two groves didn't disappoint and even had deep mud in a few places despite no rain for two weeks. Saw a cuckoo as well which was nice.

Afterwards we decanted to a bar and had some tubos of beer , red wine chasers, free tapas and put the world to rights. Interesting to get a different perspective on world problems. I was chuffed to bits when he told his mates I was a good tractor driver.

No wonder everyone has a siesta here after eating "lunch" at 3 p.m.!!  :y :y

Watched this film last night. Enjoyable enough but how could that car still be working after all it went through and hardly any scratches either. I bet Audi make sales from it.

The most far fetched to me was getting out of the reservoir by using the air out of his tyres and then driving off, presumably they just inflated themselves to the correct figure. Clever these Germans.

Maybe it is a self healing car  ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Smugglers!
« on: 06 April 2011, 15:13:15 »
Anyone watch this programme last night on I think ITV?

Some interesting facts included 1 in 9 cigarettes in Britain are smuggled. Smuggling costs the treasury an estimated loss of £2Bn every year.

They had one HGV X ray machine at Harwich (if I remember correctly). Why not have one at every port and make most vehicles drive through?

Why not employ more people to ease the drugs misery inflicted on Britain (which is the destination of choice in Europe for smuggling) ? Ex Navy folk could keep their hand in around our shores. Ex Army folk used to looking for bombs and suspicious folk could be employed on customs jobs. They could then be re employed if needed in the armed forces in the future.

Why do they let smugglers off with light or no sentence.? I did like the seizing of vehicles. 5000 cars last year.

Despite some of the presenters, I really like this programme. It reminds me that we live in a democracy with freedom of speech.

I thought the logo/brand change for the Lib Dems was excellent. ;D ;D

Anybody else watch it?

"Hi I am selling my friends vitro for him. It is a l the petrol. It ran out not couple months ago having quick look over it wants some welding doing exhaust sorting as its blowning. Bot bad car but make ideal toy 4 off roading. Quick sale wanted. He would like around 500 quid for it or make offer eats it worth to you"

Advert off another forum. I wonder if he has sold whatever it is yet? ;D ;D

Interesting situation in an Irish Call Centre.

More than 1,000 call centre workers have been issued with an ultimatum to accept a series of changes to their working conditions or face losing their jobs.

It always used to be call handling times, call handling times and not customer satisfaction............

General Discussion Area / The functionario - funny Utube clip

Don't know how to post the actual clip here is the link.

The funny thing about this is that it is very close to how things work in Spanish government run offices where people have jobs for life. We have had to go outside to Photocopying shop even though the clerk has one behind him. No wonder the Spanish employ gestors (experts in paperwork) to get things done

The new season is upon us and already I can hear the hard core saying its boring, won't watch it and so on.

I shall be watching and I have got to say I am looking forward to it. I thought Vettel was just so good in practice. Ditto Hamilton even though he was a staggering 8 tenths behind him. I thought Buttons face when the likely lads told him that Hamilton's Kers wasn't working on his lap was priceless. ;D ;D ;D  I wonder where Kubica would have qualified if Petrov managed sixth?

Do you think the gimmicks (Kers, moveable wings etc) will make for better races?

General Discussion Area / turn you away from
« on: 28 March 2011, 17:21:17 »
For me it will be down to the economics of it all.

I could really do with an economical diesel 4x4 but the Omegas then would have to go. Oh how I would miss cruise and the comfort!

What sort of equipment do you need to make a film of say a 2 hour walk that you could post on a website or Utube? Quality v Price. i.e. good quality without spending a fortune. Can I add sound afterwards instead of recording my labouring breathing?

I haven't any knowledge of the subject but I once made a video of our family on a borrowed VHS camcorder about 15 years ago! Quite harrowing viewing. ;D ;D

Interesting programme last night.

A few shocks (for me anyway).

1. The vast cost to the taxpayer still of what I thought was a privatised system. A real eyeopener. I  also loved the concept of the taxpayer paying the operating companies if passenger numbers didn't meet forecast levels.

2. The 300 or so people employed throughout the various companies to apportion blame to someone else to avoid paying any more compensation than necessary!

I was in Leicestershire last week staying in a very large village that has a main line through it. Used to have a station but it has been "built on". Abolute lunacy. Used the bus service but not very good as it stops at six p.m. Thank god for the Ka! :y

Don't see many in Spain. It is six years since visiting my folk in the Scarborough area. Arriving on Saturday in the Midlands and visiting friends in Shrewsbury and Leicester areas before travelling up North to sample some real ale + fish and chips.

If you see me in a Dark Blue V reg Ka give me a wave unless I am on your side of the road in which case swerve. I will toot any Omegas I see!! sad or excited? you decide! ;D ;D ;D
