Anyone know , when replacing knock sensors, doe's it have to be "recognised" by the ECU? :-/

Is the ecu not accepting the new sensor then? EML should go out once a new sensor is connected.

Even though the fault is now gone, does the ECU not remember the fault code until reset  i.e disconnect battery for 5 mins?

As far as I am aware if you fix the problem the code should register as old. Not sure if the 5 min thing works as I think it takes 30 odd good starts before a code is cleared.

Thanks for all your suggestions lads, but I haven't fitted anything yet . Just wondered if the "brain"  would accept an exchange knock senser when fitted.  It seems it doe's.  I've just fitted a new ax/belt tensioner, now its got to come off again so as to fit the K/sensor, all troubles aint it ?  Worst car I've had for problems, and I've had at least 50 in my time, all second hand ofcourse, mostly Vauxhall. Well somebody has too.  Many ta's.

I dont think it does have to be reset. I had a bad connection to a knock sensor on mine, as the wire made contact the EML went off. As it broke contact again, it came on.

Just replace the sensor (and yes it is a pain to get at behind the aux belt tensioner!)
and if that is the offending item the EM light will go out.... and full power will be restored! :D

As said, replace. EML will go out if ECU happy.

There is no way to clear codes without specialist equipment (discon batt doesn't work). It should stop appearing on paperclip test after 30 good starts.
