General Discussion Area / Speeding fines
« on: 24 April 2017, 20:08:50 »
Just a quick reminder that new speeding fines came into force today ... potentially a fine of 175% of your weekly wage ......

http://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/offences/item/speeding-revised-2017/

you may have to click the "band ranges" icon to open it out to see the ranges .. and remember .. if on a motorway it can be a Level 4 fine...

General Car Chat / Potential Omega replacement ... :(

Thought I'd found a "possible" contender ...

http://www.elitecar.co.uk/used-cars/holden-commodore-bordon-201701191461751

but no tow bar and, apparently, no chance of getting one in the UK ..  :(

General Discussion Area / Continental motoring breakdown cover
« on: 23 March 2017, 10:01:43 »
Due to the car now being over 15 years old, my "usual" holiday insurers (ERV) will no longer give me cover. Does anyone have any opinions /advice on good companies for holiday breakdown insurance, 20 days with a caravan ??

Green Flag / Red Pennant also appear to be uninterested due to the age of the car .. :(

To all those who like to slag off our police... whilst you might not like them booking you for speeding, drinking, texting whatever .. they put themselves at risk and save lives...

General Discussion Area / Dropbox
« on: 03 March 2017, 22:14:54 »
I've had a message that Dropbox are dropping the "public folder" and links to photos from there will no longer work. This means that all the piccies I've put up will suddenly disappear. As they are all old threads (some very old) the info cannot be edited to provide new links. I know that stuff in the guides is safe as that is moved to OOF's own server, but lots of other threads will lose info, and I can't see any way around it ...  :(

Interesting web site found by a member of ABS, might be useful to non-omega owners ....

General Discussion Area / Answer is ....
« on: 16 December 2016, 13:12:19 »
Don't "undertake" ... especially cyclists ...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-38340125

"Mr Grayling's car was stationary in traffic outside the Palace of Westminster when Mr Liu passed it on the inside."

I have little sympathy for the cyclist and think the press is now trying to "blame" a minister for the cyclists fault ...

Never let the truth get in the way of a good headline ....  :(

General Discussion Area / Windows 10 / Wifi problems
« on: 14 December 2016, 11:23:05 »
I realise that if you are reading this, you probably don't have a problem, but if someone else does, or the problem occurs in the near future, this may help.

Windows 10 latest update is causing some problems, I've had at least 5 phone calls since the weekend. The details are here, along with 2 suggested "fixes"......   http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-38301548

Stupid BBC are publishing links to fix, and MS have created a patch to fix, however, if you can't connect to the internet because of the problem .............  :(  (DOH)

Thes "fixes" don't always work, especially on laptops for some reason, however another possibility, which, so far, has a 100% success rate for me is:

right click the windows logo bottom left, choose "Command prompt (admin)"
In the text box that opens up type :  netsh winsock reset
press enter:
Reboot system

Enjoy your fully working wifi connection  :)

Hope that helps anyone with the problem.

General Car Chat / Diesel anyone ??
« on: 10 December 2016, 11:39:08 »
Another nail in the coffin of the ship and truck fuel burners ??

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-38274792

Most telling statistic, IMHO, is .... (but statistics can be manipulated)

"According to the campaign, nearly 40% of all Nitrogen Oxides emissions and PM10 pollution, which is linked to decreased lung function, within London comes from diesel vehicles."

General Discussion Area / TomTom will no longer update older models
« on: 24 November 2016, 23:32:12 »
I know a few folks use TomTom satnavs so this may be of interest to them ... from another site I frequent ... this is the tomtom announcement

"JUST ANNOUNCED:-

CHANGES TO MAPS AND SERVICES UPDATES FOR OLDER DEVICES

Click here to see which products/categories this applies to.
WHY WE NEED TO DO THIS
Throughout the last 12 years, we have continuously improved the quality of the maps and software used by your navigation device. However, the internal memory required to install these higher quality maps increases every year.

While we work tirelessly to launch new technologies and deliver a great customer experience, it has become clear that some of our earlier generation navigation devices do not have sufficient internal memory to store the latest maps and features.

HOW IT WILL AFFECT YOUR DEVICE
For affected devices (see the full list of affected devices), from November 15, 2016:
You will not be able to buy new maps or services.
You will also not receive new software updates.
Your trusted device will continue to function as it does now, but your map will become out-of-date and navigation will be less accurate.
However, this may be the perfect opportunity to discover what our new range of navigation products has to offer you.
You can find more information on our latest devices here: tomtom.com/en_gb/sat-nav/car-sat-nav/

MAP UPDATE SERVICE AND LIVE SERVICES
You will continue to receive your map updates and LIVE Services updates until the end of your subscription. You will not be able to renew the subscription after it has ended.

HOW TO INSTALL A MAP UPDATE

To be able to install map updates on one of the devices listed below, you may need to free-up internal memory that is currently used by other content on your device, for example voices and POIs. If there is still not enough space, you have the following options:

Install a map zone (see video)
Insert an SD memory card to extend the storage space of your device (available on some devices only)

LIST OF AFFECTED DEVICES

GO 300 (M1) GO 730 (J3) ONE 125 (PA/PE/PH/PN/PV/PP)
GO 500 (M3) GO 750 (W8) START (XA/XC)
GO 510 / GO 710 (V5) GO CLASSIC (B1) XL 30 Series (RH/RO/RQ)
GO 520 (M2/M4) ONE 1st Edition (G1/G2) XL IQ Routes ² / XL Classic (GG)
GO 530 (J1/J2) ONE 2nd Edition (E1/Z1/Z2/Z3)
GO 540 (WT) ONE 3rd Edition (Y1/Y3/Y5/Y8)
GO 550 LIVE (W3) ONE XL (L2/L3/L4/L7/L9)
GO 715 (M7) ONE XL HD TRAFFIC (F3) "

(numbers in brackets are the first digits of the serial number on the device)

View is a cynical one in that TT have dumped older devices just before Xmas, so that folks who own them ask friends/family for a replacement as a pressie .. :(

My VERY old original GO700, that "somehow" :) "thinks" its a GO940 and now has the very latest map [Europe - West (Nov 2016)] on it still works as advertised ....  :)

General Discussion Area / How NOT to join a motorway
« on: 29 October 2016, 14:52:12 »
Short video of a prat trying to kill me ... if the truck behind me in the middle lane had not seen what was going on and braked hard to let me out this idiot WOULD have hit me. If I hadn't been aware of the truck behind me and overtaking me I might have just pulled out to avoid this prat and ended up under 44 tonne of wheels.

The prat then just smiled and undertook 3 vehicles. Oh for a blue light ... :(

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Faulty indicator circuit
« on: 03 October 2016, 17:54:33 »
Front offside indicator has stopped working, getting the typical rapid flashing of the rear one. I've changed the bulb (and the original was still ok anyway), and I've changed the relay, both to no avail. I've also disconnected the whole trailer system to remove it from the equation.

On most cars I'd now be looking at earth connections .. but the omega is a two wire system that disappears into a loom .. to go who knows where ... :(

Only thing I haven't attacked yet is the actual switch, does this actually connect to each lamp assembly as I would expect it to have a common feed to both ?? .. but I'm willing to be told differently !!

Tried to put a meter on the socket but its difficult to get a reading on a rapidly switching system, however comparing the two sides the offside seems to be supplying a much lower voltage than the nearside .. question is why ... :(

Any advice gratefully accepted as I'm a bit stumped now
