Why's my car got a paper oil filter then?!?
« on: 13 May 2007, 14:41:37 »

Hi,

Changed the oil on my car today, pulled the 'oil filter' off and discovered it was a cover with a paper filter inside, not a screw on one? Didn't know you could get this on Omega? Now need to go find a paper one as i've got a screw one :-/

Cheers,
Iain

Not sure. I guess it's a Germanic thing, recycling the the metal can when you do a service.

Last time I saw a paper filter it was on a vintage tractor. Having done my first oil change today I must say I don't dislike it. But then mine came off easily...

I much prefer the traditional filter rather than this cannister nonsense......i had to destroy the cannster to get it off the veccy.

Mind you ive converted it to traditional filter now  :y

Advantages of the paper element:

1.      It does not waste metal
2.      It costs less to make
3.      When you release the cap, the oil (or part of it) drains back into the sump thus reducing the amount of oil that get binned with the filter instead of getting recycled

And yes, it’s a pain in the back side and I would much prefer the old canister type…

2.      It costs less to make

But usually cost more to buy......luckily my 2.2 (2003) & both vectras (2001 & 2003) use the canister type  :y

My BMW has that type of filter, although the designers had the common sense to put it sitting upright in the engine bay so it only takes 2 minutes to change it and you spill almost no oil. I'm quite glad my Omega has a metal filter considering its location. Still spills a fair bit of oil though.
