Omega General Help / Typically...
« on: 27 September 2008, 12:19:49 »
...my local VX don't have the cam cover gaskets, o-rings and sealant on the shelf.  Had a mis-fire for about a couple of weeks and finally got the time to look at things.  Printed my OOF guide out  :y and went out into the sunshine.  Oil in the spark plug wells  :(

Well, hope the weathers as good next weekend as this.

And some numpty's been under my bonnet before and stripped one of the threads on the plenum for the EGR.  There's a load of bodge on the EGR too.  Might be blanking that off while I'm in there.

I've got new leads and plugs, so I'll be changing those over too.  Question is, is it worth changing the DIS Pack while I've got things apart?  Difficult to say if it's at fault yet I know, but worth it?

Omega General Help / Gearbox Removal with a seized engine
« on: 21 September 2008, 21:07:30 »
Before I make promises that I can't keep - I've read about getting the gearbox and torque converter off, and presumably after that I'd be at the flywheel.  The thing I'm concerned about is there's a part in the destructions that say 'turn the crank shaft by hand' to get at some of the bolts.  Now my crankshaft may as well be welded up as I've had absolutely no luck moving it, extension bars the lot.  Just about put my back out trying to get the thing to turn round.

Is it possible to remove the box etc without being able to turn the crankshaft?

Omega General Help / Diesel - Water Intake
« on: 07 September 2008, 08:59:28 »
Well, I've probably just killed the car.  :(

Recently did a walk for charity (Pennine Way) and finished yesterday.  15 days of dragging myself across the hills and made it into Kirk Yetholm in the borders, met up with the family and then got in the car to go home.  Followed a string of other cars through a fairly deep puddle at reallllly low speed (7/8 inches of water) got to the other side and just started to pull uphill when everything stopped.
Spent from 2.30pm till 3.30am getting home via the AA on the back of a recovery wagon - not fun when the 8 month old screamed for half of it.  Everyone I've spoken to so far reckons it's sucked in water, which will be the end of the engine.

Anyone got any idea if it's likely to be salvagable?  Could be the end of my miggy ownership  :'(

Going to try the key soon and see if it starts.  My only thoughts were to pop the glow plugs out, crank the engine and see if it blew water out that way.
Either way, got to be in work on Tuesday, so will be sorting something out in the next couple of days.  I'd hate to lose the car (first car I'd ever bothered tinkering with - even if it wasn't big stuff).

Omega General Help / Helicoil
« on: 11 August 2008, 23:40:59 »
Covered here before, I'm sure, but I'm at the point where I'm thinking of getting the oil sump helicoiled.
It gets worse every time I change the oil now and I barely get the plug tight now, PTFE tape doesn't do the trick any more and I'm getting oil on the drive and I can tell exactly which space I use at work too so I can't imagine their that impressed with the state of their block paving  :)

Anyway, my question, for anyone that's used them before, is how difficult is it?  I get the idea, that you basically drill out, tap a new thread, wind in the helicoil, but the bit I'm worried about is snapping the tang off.  I presume it'll end up rattling around inside the sump?  Or is there a way to get it to snap off and fall to it's freedom down the hole?
I've heard nightmare stories of the tang being broken off inside the sump and being sucked into the oil pump and starving the engine of oil etc.

Anyway, MOT time in the next couple of weeks - got to fix the horn (damn thing stopped working just before the weekend, and I miss it  ;D)

Omega General Help / Rear Spring Change
« on: 15 June 2008, 21:31:20 »
Big thanks to Marks DTM Calib for the guide!  :y :y :y

I kept running back indoors to check out the pictures and descriptions as I went through it this afternoon.  (Don't ask SWMBO about the dirty fingerprints on all the doors between the car and the computer  ;)

I'd been getting really bad wear on the inner edge of a rear tyre recently which prompted the investigation.  MOT time soon so it had to be done.

I bought springs from fleabay, which seemed a damn site bigger than the ones I replaced.  It's the first time I've had the whole rear end of the car off the floor only supported by axle stands too - pretty nerve-wracking as it goes up - had to use a big block of wood with the jack to get it up high enough.
I managed to get the old ones out really easily - both had snapped at some point.  Now, getting the new ones in - that's where the challenge lies.
I'd dropped the diff down as far as the exhaust allowed, which still didn't give anywhere near enough room - the spring needed to shrink about 3 inches to get into the mounts.  Well, it's Sunday afternoon, it's 16:45 so the shops are shut - time for some innovation.  So, I had some very, very nervous moments with a vice, some wire and a few roof-rack straps before the first one eventually went in.  Spurred on by the momentary success of getting one spring in I started about the doing the same with the other one, only this side seemed to need to shrink a bit more, or I was getting weaker, or there just wasn't as much clearance because of the exhuast.
Anyway - after a lot of swearing (mightn't help, but made me feel better at the time) the second one went in.  Started to jack the diff up and, uh-oh - it began to slip off the jack head.  PANIC!!
Well, as it happened I thought it looked a bit 'iffy' as I put the first spring in, so I grabbed the spare jack from the boot - yes the really crap jack that GM give you for 'emergencies'.  This seemed like one - because, f*** me - that diff weighs a bloody ton!!  I managed to stop the big jack sliding out from under the diff with one arm whilst wiggling the stupid GM jack just in behind.  After about 15 minutes of sweat pouring off my brow and not one single passer-by coming along the street to send for a bit of help, the crisis was averted.
Anyway - the rest went smooth as - although I would warn people that the captive nut/plates that are in the body wiggle about a bit - crapped myself as they came out thinking I'd never ever, ever get them back in!

Car lowered down, and blimey did it look high!!!  The back end was sky high - fear set in.  But I thought, sod it - and took the car off down the country lanes to see what my handiwork had done.  Felt fine, no big bangs, no annoying rattles (yet) and by the time I came back and put it on the drive the rear end had dropped to a sensible level.

Job done.  Great feeling of satisfaction - now, where'd I put that beer?

No way would I have tackled this job without seeing the pictures of someone doing it themselves - or without the knowledge that this forum full of help was but a click away...

Omega General Help / Leaky Thing under the hood
« on: 21 May 2008, 18:57:07 »
Hi all...

Got steam from under the bonnet today.  Stopped to take a quick look and it seems that some small black circular thing is leaking gently and the water is being evaporated, but, I've no idea what the 'thing' is, so...

What's the circled bit in the picture?

Ta!!!

Omega General Help / Alloy Wheel - Locking Nut
« on: 12 April 2008, 16:09:48 »
Ok then, how do you get a wheel off that had a locking wheelnut on that now resembles a shredded mess?

Had new tyres fitted a few months ago (left car, picked up after work).  Just come to change the shocks and I've bent the GM Tyre Wrench, broken a socket, gone to Halfrauds and bought a stronger replacement and now watched the three prongs of the wheelnut in question tear and twist the bolt head.

Now that's off me chest - anyone recommend somewhere that can get the bloody thing off?

Omega General Help / Confirmation of Part/Cost
« on: 12 April 2008, 10:53:53 »
Hi all,

Someone out there may know - I've just been to VX to pick up the rear shocks I ordered a week ago (90542942 - Rear Standard Shocks), and they've quoted, even after explaining I've got a Trade Card, 136 quid...

...reckon I'm being ripped off?  I reckon it should be 45.85 + vat each ('bout 107 quid).

I left before taking them to check with you lot.  If they've gone up then fair 'nuff, but I don't want to be taken for a ride - a noisy, bumpy one in my case ;)

Omega General Help / Part Number - Rear Shocks (standard)
« on: 10 April 2008, 16:35:41 »
Hi,

I'm going to change the rear shocks on my Elite, but after a very long time stood in front of a very confused VX technician I don't trust that they'll give me the right parts.  The guy started to tell me about the number of different options, including police, army, etc etc...  and how inconvenient it is not to use the parts originally fitted to the car.

Anyway - does anyone know the part number for the standard (ie non self-levelling) shock absorber to stick on a 2.5TD '98 Saloon?

Cheers!

Omega General Help / Shocks - Options?
« on: 09 March 2008, 15:02:41 »
Hi all,  I've got a banging noise from my rear passenger side wheel and I'm fairly convinced it's the shock.  I've not had the wheel off (was about to when the heavens opened) but I've had a quick feel of things back there and got a hand covered in some fairly dark brown fluid that must be leaking from somewhere.

I've got an Elite, and originally self-levelling suspension.  That was disabled a while ago and perhaps now would be a good time to change to the regular setup.

Anyone give me any advice on how difficult changing the shocks from one type to another is, and how much my wallet will be lightened by?

Omega General Help / 2.5TD - Running Temp. - Thermostat?
« on: 02 December 2006, 12:37:40 »
Hi all,

I've been looking at the temperature gauge in the car for the past few weeks and thinking that it's just not hot enough.  The car used to have A/C, but the compressor died and I've not replaced it (costs far too much - and it's winter, so don't see the need just yet).  I've replaced the radiator recently and connected everything back up as should be (to my knowledge) - the old Haynes, installation is the reversal of removal thing.
The dashboard tells me the temperature never gets to 90 for a lot of the time (sits often at around 85).  Occasionally it does though, at which point the heater works much better - but that takes quite a while.  I drive 80 miles a day, and the heater just doesn't seem to do the job it should.

I'm thinking that when the AA recovered me from a radiator breakdown they filled the engine with some crap to block up the holes to get me home, and this crap has buggered the thermostat...?  Not sure...  I've got the climate control (4 dials across the dash), and it's a '98 Saloon Elite.  It's certainly the last time I'll let the AA attempt to fix the car roadside - I pay for recovery so they can damn well get me home!

Anyone got any ideas?  I'm worried that if the engine isn't being cooled properly I'll get a much bigger bill (like replace the car).  The sensor that feeds to the dash - where's that positioned on the car?  No idea!

Cheers!  ;)

Omega General Help / Wishbone Bolts 'n' bits
« on: 13 April 2007, 12:55:03 »
Hi all,

Got me some wishbones to fit, and looking forward to taking the car to pieces to do it.  It's the 'putting it back together' I hate as that's usually where I break stuff.

Anyway, although I have the wishbones themselves I read that it's wise to replace all the bolts at the same time.  I know these are only a few quid each, but are they on TC?  With the amount of oil & filters I go through I'm contemplating trying to get hold of a TC, so it'd be another excuse to get off my backside and get one.

Also, whilst I've got the car in bits, is it worth changing drop links or anything else around there?  I've an MOT due in August (a little way off I know) but I'm fairly certain that one of these, can't remember which side, was pulled up with an advisory to change it soon.

Last thing, promise, and the answer will probably be one of those 'how long's a piece of string' answer's, BUT, how long does an average set of brake pads/discs last (GM ones) doing mostly motorway miles.  A few averages or guesses would be a start...

Basically I want to go to Vauxhall with a shopping list, and I'd like to only go once...   I always forget something, or get halfway through a job and find I can't finish it because they're shut.

Thanks in advance for the help!   :)

Omega General Help / Sump Plug
« on: 29 March 2007, 08:12:26 »
Hi!

I changed the oil on my car last night (2.5TD) and began to torque the sump plug back up.  According to the literature I've got it should be 45Nm in accordance with my engine number (which seems a bit on the excessive side to me...) so I set the wrench and began to tighten, as I have several times before.

I got the point where the wrench wouldn't tighten and I was almost certain that it would strip if I kept going.

Now I'm worried that the next time will be the last.  I'll get it off and putting it back will see it strip out.  What I'm wondering is if anyone else has had a stripped sump thread to deal with, and what the options are.  New sump?  (Plug/bolt itself seems fine).  Scrappies to hunt for a new sump, and would the other vehicles the engine is found in Beamers, Landies etc have the same sump & plug?

Omega General Help / Guess the part...
« on: 21 December 2006, 07:50:32 »
Just arrived at work and was tailed in by a colleague who pointed out that something was hanging from underneath the car.  Not got my camera here, but, it's a black rubber pipe under the rear, drivers side around the wheel.

Anyone got any idea what I'll be trying to clip back together when it gets lighter?

Omega General Help / Climate Control Console
« on: 22 August 2006, 12:34:22 »
Hi all,

I've got a '98 Elite 2.5TD and had a few strange problems...

After spending a week away, on the return journey the missus lent over and pressed the button on the climate control thing that sends the air to the windscreen.  It was already actually lit but she wanted to press it anyway.  The entire panel shut down.  Temperature controllers, fan adjustment, directional control, the lot.
Initially I hoped it was just a fuse and when I got home I went through all the fuses.  Nothing.  I found one fuse under the bonnet in the big fuse/relay box (a 20A, second from the front i think).  that fuse had blown, so I replaced it, but nothing that I noticed cam back on.  The fuse that I'd expected to change had things like the heated seats, rear blind, rear window heater etc on - but they all worked.

A couple of days later the steering felt heavy, the heated seats stopped, rear blind wouldn't work etc and I checked the fuses again, and found that a 30A had now blown.  Replaced that and it all jumped back to life.  Climate control works, steering's lightened up, seats etc - everything I'd expect on that fuse according to the manual.

The following day, the wife sat back in the car, leant over and pressed the same button again (the already lit, sending air to the windscreen button).  Climate Control dies again.  The other stuff still appears to work again.  Fuse is intact.  After prodding everything on the dashboard I gave up in despair and firmly banged my hand against the button the wife had pressed.  Climate Control jumps back into life.  The oldest fix in the book (hit it).  Not the most reliable fix in the book though.

Anyone else had this sort of problem?

How does the dash come apart?  (Please say that the whole dashboard doesn't need to be stripped back to get behind the nice plastic walnut fascia...)

I'm assuming it must just be a loose connection or a dry solder joint (hopefully something I can remedy myself), but I'm damned if I can see straight away how to get behind that Climate Control panel.

Cheers

Rich
