General Discussion Area / Any plumbers out there?
« on: 11 October 2010, 20:24:38 »
I've just come home to find no heating and no hot water, which isn't ideal after being up since 4.30am, and particularly when you've got two little'uns.

I've got a Baxi Combi 28, and from the manual I can just about work out that I need to repressurise the system as it's down to 0.5 bar.  Thing is when I open up the two refill valves there's no sound of it actually refilling and the pressure gauge doesn't budge.
There's basically three pipes disappear into the boiler, and two have an interconnecting pipe which looks to me to be the way to pressure the system.

Anyone got any ideas?  The only thing I can think of recently is that on Sunday I bled a radiator where lots of air came out - and I'm guessing that'd where the pressure went.  I'd rather not pay a plumber an hours labour plus call out charge for something really obvious.

All advice greatfully received!!  :)

Had an interesting moment on my way home today.  I go on the M42 and then off to the local A roads where it all splits between the M42, M6 toll and the local roads.
As I approached the junction I'd been travelling along in lane 1, next to the hard shoulder, for a while.  A guy in an orange fiat van/ppl carrier in lane 2 gradually moves along side.  At this point there's loads of lanes across.  1 & 2 go off to the local roads, 3 and above go off to motorway.  The guy is now about 1ft ahead of me and just starts coming across to lane 1.  Initially I yield slightly and lay on the horns (stamping on everything I didn't really consider because it was so busy).  By the time I'm lifting off the gas it was too late.  We touched.  60mph and we just glance off each other.  Slight wobble but nothing dramatic.  I'm already next to the hard shoulder and ready to go off to local roads where we can compare damage and go from there, but wait, he glanced off me and almost immediately changes his mind about where he's going.  He dissappears off onto the motorway.  No gesticulating.  No mouthing off.  Just bounces off me and obviously doesn't want to go the way he was originally so intent going.

It was all a bit weird.  Didn't get his full reg, and since he didn't come off the motorway or stop neither did I.  Got home and couldn't tell any new dents from old ones.  Just felt a bit surreal like - did that really just happen? :)

I find I get pushed around a lit more in the little scabby corsa compared to the jag (or my migs when I had them).

General Discussion Area / Bl**dy auction sites!
« on: 08 April 2010, 10:29:59 »
Spent near to 500 quid on bits and pieces to ready the Jag up for an MOT.  Last bit bought through e*ay and PayPal decided that the only way to pay was with an eCheque.  So that takes 8-10 days to clear.  I gave up today and rang the seller - who has decided (without contacting me) that I was a non-payer and has sold the item already and doesn't have any others in stock.

The last piece in my MOT jigsaw.  I was prepared to drive across and pick it up in person today rather than wait for the post.  Argg!!!!  Sooooooo angry.

He's even got another identical part advertised - which means he's clearly trying to sell something he hasn't got!

General Discussion Area / 2.5TD Exhaust...
« on: 21 February 2010, 22:36:39 »
I've been given the orders by SWMBO that I've got to clear me garage of what she's describing as 'old crap that'll never be of any use to you again'.

So - I've got a 2.5TD exhaust in good nick (it was less that a year old when it was removed from the car).  It's not GM, but it sounded fine and is still in great shape.  It's rear and mid section I think (I'd have to go'n check - it's hanging up atm) - but it's a fair length so I'm not sure I'd be able to transport it that easily without dismantling it a bit further.
That said - if anyone's interested then I might be able to split the sections up and get it into my commute-mobile (VX Corsa) - in which case I'd drop it off anywhere a few miles off my commute between Stafford and Leamington Spa.

If anyone fancies it I'll be happy to see it go for a few beer vouchers.

- I appreciate I've not got enough posts to 'officially' post in the 'parts for sale' but if any admins felt generous enough to move the post that'd be just grand :y)

Anyone else feel a bit down on their luck?

Got made redundant twice in 7 months a couple of years ago and it ended up with me working miles from home, so after the thirst of the V6 I was pressed into getting a more economical way of getting to/from the office.  I didn't want to do it, but needs must (family to feed, wife looks after the kids, mortgage to pay etc), so I sought out a VX Corsa diesel to hammer the miles in and keep my barge for the weekends.  Had the radiator blow and two new tyres on the Corsa - god knows who had last done the tracking but they should be hung.  Just before Christmas the rear wishbone on the Jag seems to be on it's way out so couldn't use that for long distance, which meant cancelling plans to see the family.  MOT for the Corsa came just before christmas too, and it failed (wasn't expecting flying colours) but only on a steering gaiter, a wheel bearing and some structural chassis corrosion.  £30 for parts, a few hours sat in below zero temperatures and it was ready for welding.  I was even feeling quite pleased with myself  sorting out those two little jobs.  Came to start it the next morning and the battery was flat.  Tried to jump it from a spare and it wouldn't go.  Hooked it up to the Jag and watched the water pump self destruct (should have checked the anti-freeze perhaps as I suspect that it was perhaps a bit weak for the -10 overnight temperatures we had).  Desperately needed a car to hammer to/from work so bought a Nissan Almera in good nick for good money thinking I'd use that for a few weeks, get the Corsa back together and sell one of them on so I'd barely lose out.  Had it twelve days and on Sunday night went round a bend only to feel the car go suddenly light, no steering input, nothing I did would change the car from taking a very long slide off the edge of the country lane I was going down.  Wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for the 5ft deep drainage ditch which the car rolled over into.  Came to a very shuddering halt.  I'd normally drive the road, and that corner, at 50+, but I'd even slowed down thinking that there was a bit more mud on the road than normal so was only doing about 30.  Nevertheless I ended up climbing out that.
Just to add insult to injury (GP reckon's I've got whiplash and gave me a load of drugs to sort out the stiff neck) I went home, collected the insurance/AA details and came back to the car, only to be met by plod.  Now fair dues to the occifer who'd attended - he breathalised me (fair 'nuff - I'd had nothing anyway) and then told me the car was so far over and buried that it caused no obstruction so it didn't need to be removed straight away.  He even let me sit in the back of the warm squad car whilst I rang the insurance company/AA - neither of who would cover me for the recovery of the car.  He then suggested that I could have him organise it, as it's usually cheaper than anywhere else anyway at £120.  I agreed, and left as there was no need for me to stay - I'd collect the car in the morning.
Didn't sleep, felt like crap, saw GP then got the missus to drive me down to the recovery yard.  They'd used a strap under the roof and a crane to haul it out, completely creasing the roof and destroying any chance of me running the car again, so I was less than pleased.  Then I nearly dropped to the floor when they announced they wanted £300 quid to release it.  They wouldn't let me even try and start it in the yard (even though they'd been happily moving it around by driving it).  Then they had the cheek to offer to dispose of it free of charge!  I argued that they should offset the scrap value of the car but they were having none of it.  I ended up paying up, drove the car out their yard and intend to sell it on as scrap tomorrow.
So, now I'm stuck with a knackered Almera, a Corsa in need of waterpump, welding, MOT & Tax, a long-distance cruiser I daren't drive more than a few miles, and a shot neck.
Life has it's ups and downs but at the moment there seems a lot more downs than up!

General Discussion Area / Office Closed
« on: 13 January 2010, 09:27:36 »
Well, I've just arrived at work and bought myself a bacon sandwich.  Arrived at my desk to find the call to close the office was taken 10 minutes ago.  So now I have to drive the 63 miles back home again.

Long way to come for a bacon sandwich!

General Discussion Area / Car Tax & Insurance >:(
« on: 10 July 2009, 13:08:37 »
I've tried twice to buy a car now.  First time the woman selling it thought she'd be able to give me a printout of her online tax renewal (forgetting the tax disc would arrive at her address, not mine) which she'd do on the roadside when I bought the car, then she thought she'd be able to tax it without insurace, so now I've organised my own insurace (new policy) to start on the day that I pick the car up.

Bought the insurance on Monday, expecting to be able to get the docs through the post during the week to pick up the car tomorrow.  Turns out that because I've not asked for the policy to start until tomorrow they weren't even going to send the docs out till then.  Now they're coming special delivery, which means I *might* get a chance to receive them in time to get to a post office tomorrow.  Not looking likely now.  Bloody typical.  Every policy I've ever had in the past has the start date on so is completely bloody useless until that day.
 >:(

What really annoys me is that we have a *computer* somewhere that knows whether a car is insured or not.  The police use it, the online tax renewal website uses it, but the post office insist on seeing the original docs (no photocopies/faxes/etc).

Grrrrrrrrr......

Not having much luck with migs the minute.  The last one drowned  :(

..but this one's pretty much all my fault  :'(

Just had a coming together with a VW Beetle.  Gap to park a jumbo jet in on a roundabout (literally nothing coming), they roll forward as if about to go, I look to check there's still nothing coming, bang.  They decided to stop after all.

My grill's smashed, bumper is pushed right in and radiator popped.  I've got an old grill/bumper from the previous mig but the rad's different.

Has anyone go a 2.5v6 auto/climate radiator?

Thanks in advance!!

General Discussion Area / Cam Cover Change
« on: 12 October 2008, 17:52:54 »
Well, fingers crossed.  Been under the bonnet for what seems like all afternoon.  Turns out that whoever fitted the cam cover gaskets last time had been to B&Q for sealant, and then applied it librally to everything that they put back together, including the plenum bolt that they've stripped the thread from.  There was red gunk (silicon sealant consistancy) on the underside of the breather box on top, around all the edges of the cam covers, on the EGR Valve, on the throttle body, and smeared on just about every pipe that I came across.

Anyway, gaskets done.  Fingers crossed that when I turn the key tomorrow morning that everything fires up.  Changed all the HT Leads as well, and not sure I've quite got the firing order right.
If you hear 'B0LL0X' at around 7.00am (no matter where you are in the country - I'll be yelling loud enough) then you can guess what's happened...

Hope your cam covers went more smoothly Lizzie!  (I think there may have been a few done this weekend)

General Discussion Area / Cam Cover Gaskets
« on: 03 October 2008, 17:34:09 »
Went to VX last week to get the bits, didn't have any in, so ordered them...

roughly how much should this lot come to?  (inc Vat)

    * Rocker gaskets: 90511451, one set per bank (£25+ Vat retail)
    * O-rings: 90411826, 8 per bank (13p+ VAT retail)
    * Gasket, Inlet bridge to head: 90501652, 2 off
    * Gasket, Inlet to Inlet bridge: 90501653, 3 off
    * Gasket, Inlet to Plenum O rings: 9118135, 6 off
    * Sealent, Black (not the Green stuff!): 90485251, 1 off

Any guesses?  Because I sent the missus to pick them up (armed with TC) and I know how much she handed over...  :o

General Discussion Area / Gearbox off :)
« on: 27 September 2008, 21:43:41 »
Spent five and a half hours wrestling with the gearbox on the old tractor.  I'm covered head to foot in oil, atf, cuts and grazes.  I've managed a small pool of atf on the drive (so that'll add another stain to the patchwork that's there already) and taken a load of other 'bits' out the engine bay in the process.

...but it was great fun, and I've got a spare gearbox in the garage now.   Very satisfying to pull things to bits - especially in the knowledge you never have to put them back together again (usually for the drive to work the next day).

We'll just have to wait and see if the torque converter can come off tomorrow - but I'll be leaving that to the hands of a more experienced tractor wrestler  ;)

General Discussion Area / Diesel out, V6 in
« on: 10 September 2008, 22:14:02 »
Well, finally bit the bullet and made my mind up on what to do next.  With the diesel miggy dead and unlikely to come back to life (but I'll never say never till it's off my drive) and needing a new car I came to the difficult decision of what to replace it with.  I spent hours looking at VW's, old Merc's, old Jag's, Mondeos, refused to touch anything french, and came to the conclusion that there was only one possible replacement for an Omega....  another Omega  :y

Got a '99 2.5 with 65,000 on the clock.  Only a CDX, so will be looking to get some of the Elite gear across to the new motor.

Just out of interest - how complicated would it be to transfer:

Auto-Dipping mirror
Memory Seats
Bose/Head-Unit/Changer
Rear Blind/Shelf/Speakers
Xenon's and associated sensors/washers

And I've got a wierd little button on the dash that I didn't have in the old one next to the headlight switch which has a sort of T and 'm' I think, with a little LED on it.  Haven't pressed it yet - no idea what it does  ;D
