I suspect dispack failure causing misfire. Screws are Torx E10. There is not room between head and dispack for my standard socket. 8mm socket not holding. I guess I need a deep E10 socket. Is there any other way?

I was moving my old wheels about, and was struck how much heavier the 16" were, so I weighed them. A 195/15 tyre on an alloy wheel weighs 37lbs. It weighs the same on a steel wheel. A 225/16 tyre on an alloy wheel weighs 45lbs. I was led to believe that unsprung weight should be kept to a minimum.

I run my 2000 2.5 estate on 195/15 tyres on steel spare wheels just to use the tyres up. Most of my other cars are on 225/16s. I quite like the feel and handling of the 2.5 estate.

Do big wheels and wide tyres give better feel and handing, or are they just fashion items?

Omega General Help / Brake fluid changing - does wheel order matter?
« on: 07 December 2014, 22:21:16 »
I note Haynes has a bleeding order for Omegas. Does this matter when merely changing fluid, or can I do it in any order?

Omega General Help / Misfire under load 2.5 petrol manual estate
« on: 06 December 2014, 07:51:56 »
My favourite Omega, the 2.5 petrol CDX, X reg, mileage 153162, bought from OOF member ajsphead in March 2014, has developed a misfire under extreme load, i.e. full throttle 20mph in 4th gear. No EML on.

Service records show plug change Feb 2013 140000 miles.crank sensor at 144K. e-bay advert stated 'the breathers and plenum have been cleaned at 140K and all the belts etc. done at 133K. the cam cover gaskets are fine too. I've never had a problem with the coil packs'.

Last week I posted my suspicion of leaking scuttle. I have since sealed it, anyway it was dry last night.

Oil/water in plug holes? Plug leads? Coil pack? My money is on coil pack, but I would welcome expert advice.

General Car Chat / removing oil filter from a meriva 1.6
« on: 02 December 2014, 19:04:45 »
My sister has asked me to service her Meriva 1.6. The oil filter (cartridge type) is very tight and I cannot shift it. Access is poor. Any tips?

Omega General Help / How do Opel set up Omega suspension?
« on: 29 November 2014, 19:24:02 »
I understand from Al that Wheels in Motion (WIM) adjust suspension geometry with the car suspended and all wheels in the air, setting parameters to pre-calculated settings so as to be correct when car is on its wheels. Does anyone know how Opel do it in the factory? I expect they support the car under wishbones and trailing arms, with the 70 kilos in the front seats and full fuel load, as Haynes states.

That is how I set my toe-in, as said before. It now occurs to me that setting my front wheels parallel to rear also allows me to measure rear wheel toe-in, and even reset it if I can adjust the rear track rods.

Can I not also set the camber at the same time?

Camber is not critical for handling or feel, but affects tyre wear. With car supported under wishbones at wheel end, all I need do is loosen the strut to hub bolts and tap it with a hammer to adjust it. Question is, how do I measure it?

Omega General Help / Scuttle leaks causing misfires
« on: 29 November 2014, 10:19:29 »
You guys probably all know this, but yesterday a thought occurred to me.

Every Friday night I drive from Steventon Oxfordshire  to Somerset, have done so for 20 years. On wet nights my Omega often misfires as I round a certain roundabout in 4th gear as I leave Bath. Next day car is fine, so I do nothing about it.

The Senators did not do it.

I have recently learned on this forum that the scuttle join above the coil pack (PFL cars) is sealed when new, but, once disturbed, leaks. I reckon rain dribbles down on to the coil pack, allowing tracking between terminals and thus misfiring under load. Also the tracking could in time burn into the epoxy bodies of the coil packs, leading to eventual failure.

I have changed several coil packs, boring job. If I am right, this chore could be avoided by sealing the scuttle after every dismantling. I have already sealed scuttles on two cars, still four to go. Last night's car has not been done, and it misfired on the way home, hence my Damascean thought.

I invite your comments.

Omega General Help / P0170 Fuel trim bank 1 on a 2.2
« on: 26 November 2014, 21:35:38 »
My son's 2.2 petrol manual saloon facelift had EML on, code reader read as above. Is there any cause for alarm? What does it mean; is is pre-cat lambda sensor not content?

On my 2000 2.5 petrol estate there is a rattling at the front of the car as I pass over bumps at 25mph. I cannot see anything loose. I thought it might be drop links, though they knock rther than rattle. I changed the o/s drop link - noise seemed to be more on the right - the one I removed was perfect, and the noise is still there.

Any ideas?

Chatting to chums in the pub last night I mentioned that the Omega has a concentric clutch slave cylinder. Rubbish, they said, that would need two concentric seals, hard way of doing it. I saw their point, but still reckonned it was concentric. Today, looking at my photographs, I wonder if it has any moving seals, or if it simply 'swells' when hydraulic pressure is applied.  Please enlighten me.

I moved wife's 3.2 ex-police manual saloon out of garage on Friday. It was misfiring badly and the EML was flashing. Saturday I moved it back into garage and misfire had stopped, so had EML flashing. No codes are stored.

It did the same thing November 2011, 14000 miles ago. Then I found water in no. 6 plug hole. I changed cam cover gaskets, cleared breathers, changed plugs and LH coil pack. No more trouble until Friday.

On advice from OOF I sealed central wiper hole in scuttle with Vx black sealant in 2012.

My instinct is to change the plugs and see what I  find. Any comments?

I need a set of plugs for my 3.2. Can anyone advise part number and suggest a cheap source?

Yesterday I moved the car, it had a misfire and the EML flashed at me. I find the same thing happened November 2011 and I cured it with a plug change. This car has had water in rear left plug hole once before, but record does not record that in Nov. 11. I thought i had sealed the scuttle centre hole, but who knows.

Omega General Help / Centre steering tie rod gone; where to buy?
« on: 16 October 2014, 14:17:17 »
My 2000 2.5 Omega saloon has failed MOT on centre track rod steering box drop arm joint failure. Bought a used one, joint is worse than mine! What is best source for a good one?

Haynes recommends removing the hub assembly to facilitate replacing handbrake steady springs, so tricky he found to replace them. The OOF guide states that early Omegas had a different arrangement, with a long pin holding the steady springs, with a screwdriver head at the one end and a spread end engaging in a slot in the backplate at the other. Thsi earlier system appears so superior to the later tricky one that I wonder why they changed. Please enlighten me.
