Got rear arch quote for £111.10. Quicj question...
« on: 23 July 2014, 13:17:28 »

Hi ya,

As above just about to order arches (total cost for both). i dont know the width of the new arches. but if my rust exceeds the width will i be able to ''fusge'' it with some spare steel welded in between?

Was going to do the filler thing that nick mentioned but these are so cheap (£50 each) it would save me a lot of hassel with shaping the filler.

If the repair is a good fit(and that's not always a given with bought panels), there will still be some distortion from the welding and grinding. So,you will still need some filler to hide the join.

For that sort of money, I reckon you'd be better having a go at making your own.

ok mate. i just assumed that would be too good of a price to pass up  :-\

Thanks for the advice.

in terms of making my own.... to keep it simple.... should i cut out the rough shape of the arch as you look at it (slightly undersized to allow for filler ''shaping'') and then an under carriage piece and then a inside 'side' panel/ weld all that in, lob some filler on and if i make a mess up of the filler get the guy at the body shop to get the original shape back for me?

Forget using the word 'rough'; it will lead you into bad habits!
Repair panels are best made from templates; cereal boxes provide a suitable cardboard, which is easily cut and bent. Make the template as many times as is necessary; it's quicker and easier than doing the job in metal.
There's probably 30mins work in making a respectable arch patch.

That's the company I bought my replacement arches from, apparently they are made in Denmark and you've got to grab them when they are in stock as the the future supply can be a bit iffy :-\ Good service from them and all cars arches look as good as new, hopefully I wont be ordering any more in the near future :y
