General Car Chat / Update to rear shock replacement guide
« on: 14 May 2011, 20:02:29 »
Hi Mod's,
Just did my rear shocks today and have a couple of additions to the guide if that's OK.

I've put it here - if you're happy with it - could you add it to the maint' section - or let me know and I'll add it (if I can).

Thanks
Ian.

Hi all,
Just did the rear s/l shocks on my car today. The guide on here is a great help – it really is a pretty straightforward job.
Just a couple of additional notes to add to the guide though.
The bottom bolt on mine was exactly a 13/16th Imperial . 21mm is pretty close but as it can be extremely tough to undo ( I had my Torque wrench on it to get the extra leverage) – I wouldn’t risk it slipping off with a slightly lose fitting socket. It got tighter to undo as the end of the threaded bolt retreated back through the mounting so I re- tightened it cleaned the thread again – added Wd40 and tried again – perfect.
I replaced like for like – the bit that appears to be missing off the guide is the reference to the top mounting fixings.
On the old shock the rubber bush in the wheel arch sits on a cupped plate – I didn’t pay too much attention to it as it didn’t come off when I removed the shock. I tried bashing it and it still remained firm and to be honest looked like it was welded as part of the casing. But there was no sign of one on the new shock,  BUT the new bush looked like it fitted Ok directly on top of the shock body – so I carried on and fitted it without it.
Now I could see why you’d need a deep socket on the 16mm nut in the boot – because the threaded stem protrudes a long way into the boot. Tightened it up and all seemed OK.
I then went to the other side to repeat the job.
This time as I took the shock off – the said cupped plate and a spacer bush fell off with no assistance whatsoever – bug**r. This meant I now realised these parts are needed to be swapped over onto the new shocks – knickers.
So this one went swimmingly – the bits duly swapped over and the shock replaced AND you don’t need a deep 16mm to do the top nut up fully. As far as torque setting – once it bites tight on the spacer there’s no need to try and over-tighten it. The bottom bolt based on the heave I needed to undo it seemed happy to nip up to 90Nm
Then I returned to the other old one and with a bit of soaking with WD and a lot of bashing with a ball pein and a tyre lever got the bits off the old one and re-fitted to the one I’d just done – literally 5 minutes to release the top nut – raise the car – the shock lowered itself out of the top mount – fitted said cup/spacer/rubber bush – re-located top mount and re-tightened (didn’t even take the wheel off this time).
Pictures below show the offending pieces that need to be swapped over (on mine anyway)

Before fitting the spacer and cup to the new shocks – I liberally coated the stem with copper slip as they were seriously corroded on the old ones.

I now have fully functioning Self Levelling suspension again – chuffed to bits as this really was quite an easy job.

General Car Chat / Wheel Refurbishment deal
« on: 03 January 2011, 11:46:52 »
Hi all,

Was doing some digging around yesterday for somewhere to get my alloys refurbished this year and came across this site.
http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/
Got an instant quote by e-mail from the site which seemed worth the dosh if the finish matched the testimonials.
Today got an e-mail from them (the Swindon branch anyway !)  that they are doing a January special deal of £200 + Vat for 4 wheels in the standard finishes (including full strip and refit, balance and valves)
They'll do same day if you can drop the car off... worth a look if you're interested.
I'll make sure I get some before and after shots - I'm going for Hi Power Silver  :y

Cheers
Ian.

Meetings, gatherings, parties etc / MPH & Classic Motor Show pictures
« on: 17 November 2010, 23:50:00 »
Hi all,
It's taken me a while to sift through all these and there are too many to practically display on here I reckon so hopefully this link will work (Let me know if it doesn't and I'll try again)

http://s1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa344/ianu2/MPH%20and%20Classic%20Car%20Show%202010/?albumview=slideshow

What a great show - again far too many cars to capture - here is my selected highlights. Loads to see in both the MPH and Classic arenas - not always that easy to get a decent photo of some of the cars - but with some creative angles and cropping hopefully sufficiently interesting enough to keep you hooked to the end.
Apparently one of the photos has 2 of the smallest production cars in the world in it (as featured on Top Gear with JC) - I'm damned if I can spot it  ::). There were loads of people also crammed round the stand also trying to find it and paying money to have their photo taken next to it  ;)

I found myself strangely transfixed by the American metal - the bright red Mustangs were awesome and the Eldorado - well what can you say  :o.

I think we've now entered into a whole new opportunity of possibilities with the very popular presence of 'wrapped' vehicles on display in the MPH hall. The effects were amazing from the mirror wrapped Citroen DS3 to the matt black wrapped M3 and Focus RS - absolutely stunning. The white wrapped bodies on the Citroen stand also took your breath away  8-) but wouldn't stand still long enough to get a picture..

Hopefully the quality of the website does the pictures justice - if you're interested in any let me know.

My car of the show  :-/... too difficult to call but in no particular order 5 of the best would be:
 :yAston Rapide
:yBlack wrap M3 - yes its only a beemer - but it looked stunning.
:yThe white Citroen DS3 - it looked fantastic honest  :-X
 :yMach1 Mustang + the one next to it (Ok that's 2  ::))
 :yThe black Jag XK150

What would you choose if you had the money  :question

..loads of classic stuff I didn't even photgraph..

Enjoy
Cheers
Ian.

Hi all,
Anyone I know from the Oxford meets going to either of these ? - or anyone else for that matter ?
AutobahnStormer have a deal on for members too - tickets allow entry to the MPH Show (not Top Gear Live though) and Classic Bike Show as well apparently.
Single Tickets £15 (save £5 on door prices for Sat/Sun)
Family ticket £34.50

EVO magazine are also offering discounted prices via their Website I believe too.

Haven't committed myself yet - but thought I'd mention it.

Cheers
Ian.

Meetings, gatherings, parties etc / Oxford meet #4 proposal
« on: 02 September 2010, 21:45:26 »
Hi all,
This is touched on in a couple of threads already - but thought I'd re package it and come straight to the point as it could be the perfect Oxfordshire location.
How about we take the opportunity to do a bit for charity and hijack use the Abingdon 4x4 festival that Simon72 is championing as the perfect venue to socialise and take in the entertainment available.
http://www.abingdon4x4festival.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=49&vmcchk=1&Itemid=26
It's on Sept 25 & 26th. I will be going on the 25th with my Volvo XC90 and probably make a full day of it (in case I break something   :-X).
It's an airfield - so space shouldn't be a problem. Just becareful which queue you join in the car park if there is one  :o :o :o.

It's 15 quid per car - or 30 if you want to take it off road  ;D - but it should be a good day out.

How about it ? - we can do something a tad cheaper for #5 meet.

Cheers
Ian.

General Discussion Area / Cold snap - how low can you go
« on: 07 December 2010, 21:16:59 »
I know there are many around the country suffering horrendous weather conditions at the moment and for us southern softies it's come as a bit of a shock I'm sure.
I'm not just talking about the snow - but the unprecedented sub zero temperatures.
I - probably like most sit in the comfort of our lounge in the evening and look in amazement  :o at the temperatures on the weather map after the news and get excited if the guage in the car reads lower than minus 4 the next morning. I remember the eureka moment taking the kids to school last year when the guage dropped to minus 6 and shrieking to the kids to look at the guage.

Never in a million years did I think for one moment today when I left Bicester to travel to Wakefield...... the temperature in Bicester at 6:15am minus 7......as I got to the M1 at Northampton ...minus 8.......as I headed north approaching Leicester.......minus 9 ( I was now willing for another degree to take it into double figures :P ) ..come on you can do it..... yes  :y - Nottingham minus 10 (minus 10 for goodness sake) yes  :y........hang on ......past Nottingham minus 11.....minus 12..... :-X :-X :-X

Ok Ok - time to stop at the next services as screen wash was now obviously one large ice cube behind the front bumper and I needed to see where I was going.  So - Trowley Services I think it was ... into the car park...minus 12.5. No real snow anywhere - but the remains of some packed ice in the parking areas. As I pulled to a stop the guage which I'd normally expect to warm up a bit with heat from the engine wafting around ... but no it finally stopped on this  :o :o :o :o :o

As I said - never in a million years in this country in the north Midlands - bright sunshine - not a lot of snow around did I expect to be drinking a coffee in my car looking at this.
I'm sure those in the not so far reaches of the North can do better than this - but I'm flabbergasted  ::)

Wakefield by the way was a pussy minus 3 - Hull however I believe was also competing for minus 14.

Return journey - traffic reports all over the place of major accidents on many motorways - take real good care out there folks - you might be able to stop - but you need to be thinking FOR those around you too especially the trucks  :y.

Cheers
Ian.

This caused a bit of a dilema for me yesterday. But how do you try and attract the attention of the driver of the car in front of you and get them to stop for safety reasons - without obviously scaring the pants off them and looking like a road rage nutter that just wants to get past them ?
Is there an internationally recognised code of gestures/ light flashes / horn beeps that (assuming the person is looking in their mirror) mean 'hey pull over - you're going to have or cause a serious accident if you keep driving that vehicle'.
Situation yesterday - I was out in my Volvo XC90 (which probably didn't help  :-?) travelling on a main A road - 50 / 60 mph limit with a couple of 30mph zones too following a Vauxhall Corsa at a safe distance. Approaching a long sweeping left hand bend (60mph) - the Corsa makes a wide sweep over the centre line  :-X and recovers back onto the right side of the road. I imediatley drop back a few more yards thinking 'oh oh' either asleep or on the phone.. but then notice the o/s rear tyre is almost flat.
SO assuming they are oblivious to the fact - I reckon - if I can attract their attention before they completely lose control in front of me - they'll pull over and I can point it out - I'll even help change the wheel for them  8-).
Now this road is the main A41 between Bicester and Aylesbury. There are plenty of Layby's, turnings and a couple of villages wher you can slow down enough to stop safely (this is broad daylight - plenty of people around). Usually if I can get the opportunity to stop alongside a car I'll toot and ask them to wind down their window - but this just isn't possible on this stretch of road (and I certainly wouldn't attempt it on the move  :o). So I try flashing my lights politely to attract their attention - no acknowledgement. I wait a few miles for the next layby approaching and try again this time including a left indicator - nothing. Ok I know coming up is a village where it drops to 30mph - great - chance to get close enough and also gesture through the windscreen to pull over - nothing. OK up the ante a bit before we lose the 30 limit back to 60mph. Flashing lights and toot the horn & gesture - nope  :-/. The tyre on this car is not flat on the rim - but you can see it's not handling corners very well.. too late and we're back on the 60 limit stretch.
As we approachg Aylesbury - I think great - I might be able to get alongside at a set of lights here - nope - a few subtle flashes and gestures - then I realise that the driver of the car is in fact female and I think 'oh' that'll be why then !!  :-[
I still can't seem to get her attention - and I'm trying to stay with her for as long as I can - coincidentally we're both going the same route round the Town Centre - or she's trying to lose me ... until she eventually turns off into a multi storey. I abandon the 'chase' and hope that she notices the flat tyre when she gets out of the car - unless it was actually an attempt to shake me off  :-/ :-/ -. I tried - what else could you do ??
The A41 is a mysteriously dangerous piece of road - a friend of mine has been killed on it - an out of conrol car coming towards you isn't pretty ...

SO - any thoughts ??

Cheers
Ian.
PS I quite regularly use the opportunity at lights or roundabouts to point out to other drivers that they have a brake light or tail light out. Even did it to a Police car in Bicester once  ;D

General Discussion Area / Mud Flaps / Spats
« on: 17 February 2010, 22:20:08 »
Hi all,
Has anyone come across a supplier that sells wheel arch spats suitable for the Omega. I don't mean the full pimpmobile wheel arch extensions  8-)- but discreet semi mudflap type things to stop the shot blasting of the sills without dominating the appearance.
I didn't want anything as heavy looking as the fitted GM items that are moulded around the wheel arch lip and sill ?

Cheers
Ian.
