All my lights are going off intermittently
« on: 18 April 2019, 19:24:49 »

I bought a 2002 2.2 Omega 3 weeks ago and all the lights (Including dash) go off suddenly, then come back on a second or two later.
This is worrying to say the least.
Can anyone please suggest where I should start looking first as I am at a total loss ?

Just the dash lights or headlights and ignition... ie does the car cut out?

Any recent work done?

All lights, headlights and dash, the engine is unaffected.
I have checked all the visible connections, e.g. battery and leads from it.

I have had no work done on it whatsoever, she is low mileage and looks well cared for.

I was wondering if it could be a relay.

Thanks for the rapid response  :)

If you slap the dash end next to the light switch, does it have any effect?

Also what spec is it?

The lights come back on too quickly to try anything like slapping,by the time I start pulling over they are back on.

It happens whilst driving in a straight line or cornering very gently on a smooth surface, so it seems unrelated to outside influences.

I guess it is a basic spec as everything is minimal including the lights, the only difference from standard is that it is stretched 6 door Limo.

I didn't mean slap it to fix it ???

Does slapping it replicate the fault ::)

Also being a six door car doesn't help with spec... It will have started out as a normal Omega in a normal trim level. The trim level may have a bearing on the fault as some of the wiring differs ;)

I have changed my profile picture..... I feel like a dumba.. derrrr I gave it a slap and off they went another slap and back they came.
Now the fun begins, I will have to find out how to get to the switch and relevant wiring tomorrow, in daylight.

Thank you so very much for pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks again  :y

If you have another Omega of similar age with identical headlights, swap the switch and see it it repeats ;)

I have 2 others, one unfortunately has rotted beyond economical repair, but is being kept as a donor vehicle for the others.
It has already proved to be useful in this sense as it has a "factory fitted" LPG system from which the tank and tank electronics were removed yesterday to be fitted to the limo using brand new front end electronics and pipework, next week.

Hopefully the switches will be interchangeable, I will let you know what happens.

Again, thanks for your help :y

I had to take the switch from my 2001 2.5 Estate as the earlier 2.0 switch was too dissimilar to the problem switch.

The problem appears to have been sorted, I thank you so very much for your guidance.

I will strip down the faulty switch to see what part caused the problem and to to see if it can be repaired, I will take photographs and possibly videos of the process in case the repair is relatively simple. If I can find a simple resolution I will post the entire process somewhere on the forum to help anyone else that may come across a similar problem in the future.

Again, many many thanks :)

Nice easy fix ;)

If the difference is simply the fog light switches, these can simply be popped out and swapped over.

Look at the base of the removed one and all will be clear  :y
