How do we know? As one of the GRU Skripal hackers exposed by the Dutch has been traced via his passport and car registration with his work address and there are 305 cars on a public register with the same address. ;D ;D ;D

It is like the GRU agents that poisoned the Skripals the special passport numbers have been found to be a complete block of special passports that have exposed many GRU agents and their Western travels, blowing their cover. ;D ;D ;D

Russia might be the best at psyops and disinformation, but their other trade craft less so and their use of 'incrimination photographs' even worse with many traced to old events, different news stories, lifted from computer games or Micky Mouse standard Photoshopped images. :-[ :-[ :-[ ;D ;D ;D

We've known for years what the Russians have been doing. We also know that don't care, and are metaphorically laughing in our face.
What we (I) don't know is WTF we are going to do about it. Don't push them hard enough and they will become emboldened and continue as normal. Push them too hard and we risk an all out conflict. The only hope, in my opinion, is that the Russian people get uncomfortable enough to do something about it themselves. Hardly likely, though, when they are being fed anti western propaganda on an hourly basis.
Where's James Bond when you need him?

This all rather reminds me of the German Abwehr, the Military Intelligence Service, during WW2 under it's head, Admiral Canaris, an anti-Nazi, anti-Hitler, managed to run the operation to the benefit of the Allies. With poorly trained agents landed in the UK, and USA, he made sure they were spotted by the Allies Intelligence Services and captured.  Under the noses of both SS Reinhard Heydrich and his boss Himmler he schemed to the detriment of Hitler, the Nazis, in an effort to save Germany. He gave information to Czech and Slovak agents which led to the death of Heydrich, and even plotted to kill Hitler which eventually cost him his life.

The Russians perhaps have got similar people working in the GRU who are anti-Putin.  The GRU's failure to keep their operations and agents 'secret' and appear so ametaur looks as though 'some within' are manipulating the situation to the detriment of Putin ;).

Most are committed to Putin at the moment as they are well rewarded, but Western sanctions is making getting money / travelling abroad more difficult or individual sanctions are making both impossible. Corruption is rife, like in the Soviet era, so to get ahead for you as an official to have any interest in solving a person's problem involves a thick brown envelope being required (much of this also applies to Ukraine where corruption is getting worse. I know lots about this from family connections). Putin is over confident, but rational and when he is pushed back by the West he backs off. He respects strength and exploits weakness. Many aspects of the Donbas conflict has shown this and likewise his spats with Turkey. Weakness like Obama he has effectively exploited, by gaming the US election to get his bitch Trump elected, likewise in European countries he has funded and owns most far left and far right political parties. Limits in democracies frustrates Putin as an absolute dictator but this is a long game and he is winning bigly in the US where their democracy currently hangs by a thread, but generally less so in Europe but he owns Turkey, Hungary, Greece, increasingly Italy and the NF in France and AfD in Germany.

If you read up on communist doctrine they are happy to play the long game over 20-100 years against the weak democratic WEIDS in the West and Russia and China are currently winning with few realising the dangers with Australia by far ahead on this. Cold War 2.0 is in progress and few will notice before their countries fall and all freedom and human rights are lost and by then it is too late for multiple generations.

What most people don't understand is that so much they currently take for granted will be gone from property rights (they now belong to the state), human rights, freedom of expression to not having a job being illegal, but your choice is Gulag or slavery. My MIL has been there as a Kolkhoz labourer and was never paid as their bosses stole all their wages, so in return they stole everything they could get away with. Get caught and you and your family disappears never to be seen or heard from again  as enemies of the state. This is a fraction of what I know that awaits you, but it is much much worse than I have described so far, like what happens if you don't bribe annually your local political commissioner enough or where he fancies your wife/daughter and you don't satisfy his lusts.

As an aside Putin, as a wife beater, has now made ALL domestic violence legal as men's rights in Russia. :( :( :(
